3. Dollar Volume <strong>of</strong> Direct Loans<br />

Direct loans represented the smallest category <strong>of</strong> other financial assistance provided <strong>to</strong> states. Such<br />

assistance <strong>to</strong> the fifty states <strong>to</strong>taled $54 billion, or $175 per capita, and represented 3 percent <strong>of</strong> other<br />

financial assistance <strong>to</strong> states. These loans <strong>to</strong> <strong>Florida</strong> <strong>to</strong>taled $2.1 billion, or $115 per capita, and<br />

represented only 0.4 percent <strong>of</strong> other financial assistance <strong>to</strong> the state. As illustrated in Table 1-10 on<br />

page 26, <strong>Florida</strong> had the 7 th largest dollar volume <strong>of</strong> all states, the 5 th largest volume <strong>of</strong> the most<br />

populous states, and the 3 rd largest volume <strong>of</strong> the southern states. On a per capita basis, <strong>Florida</strong><br />

ranked 36 th among all states, and last among the most populous states, and 13 th among the southern<br />

states. The dollar volumes <strong>of</strong> direct loans <strong>to</strong> <strong>Florida</strong> are summarized below.<br />
