In terms of <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> cover classes of areas granted for <strong>in</strong>vestment<br />

<strong>in</strong> different subsectors, <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g dist<strong>in</strong>ctions emerge.<br />

While <strong>the</strong> unstocked forest <strong>and</strong> ray <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> forest classes<br />

constitute <strong>the</strong> largest portion of area under <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong><br />

each subsector, <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> agriculture subsector has<br />

<strong>the</strong> greatest portion (20%) of l<strong>and</strong>s with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> agriculture<br />

l<strong>and</strong> category to its overall area under <strong>in</strong>vestment (see Map<br />

21 <strong>and</strong> Figure 28). Similarly, 91% of <strong>the</strong> area under <strong>in</strong>vestment<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> forestry subsector is classified ei<strong>the</strong>r as unstocked forest<br />

<strong>and</strong> ray or forest, both of which are l<strong>and</strong> classes characterized<br />

by small scale agriculture <strong>and</strong> related activities, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore<br />

heavily depended upon by rural smallholder populations.<br />

The l<strong>and</strong> cover class profiles also differ accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>in</strong>vestors’<br />

country of orig<strong>in</strong>. These differences often parallel <strong>the</strong>se<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestors’ respective <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> subsectors, such<br />

as Thai <strong>in</strong>vestors who <strong>in</strong>vest disproportionately <strong>in</strong> agriculture<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore claim <strong>the</strong> highest portion of l<strong>and</strong> classified as<br />

agricultural l<strong>and</strong> compared to o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>vestor countries (see<br />

Figure 29). On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong> data suggests that Ch<strong>in</strong>ese<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestment covers a mosaic of small scale cropp<strong>in</strong>g areas <strong>and</strong><br />

forest fallows (with 63% of areas under Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>in</strong>vestment<br />

classified as unstocked forest <strong>and</strong> ray), but also a significant<br />

share of l<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> forest cover class (28%).<br />
