<strong>PNAA</strong>GOALS <br />

PNAIINITIATIVES <br />

1. Review and act on legislation and public policies that directly and indirectly affect <br />

the healthcare and nursing practices. PNAI supported numerous legislative <br />

health bills through the Illinois Nurses Association, some of the bills in 2005 were: I<br />

• Senate Bill 2064 eliminated CGFNS<br />

• Defeated House Bill 866 allowing aids to pass medications<br />

• Senate Bill 201 banned mandatory overtime<br />

• HB 399 is to implement violence protection in the workplace<br />

2> Develop, implement, and evaluate programs in nursing leadership and practice,<br />

education, and research relevant to professional growth of its members and health<br />

care needs of the community.<br />

• Attended the Tobacco Use, Prevention and Cessation Research Conference; PNAI<br />

participated in the <strong>PNAA</strong> tobacco research survey and supported the campaign<br />

• and passage of the "Smoke Free Chicago Ordinance." ,<br />

• Members participated in medical missions, alumni/community org. fund raisings and health<br />

fares.<br />

3. PNAI initiated the first North Central Regional Conference in 1998. On April 7-8<br />

PNAI hosted the 7th and anniversary of the conference with the theme; "Nurses<br />

Building and Crossing Bridges Together, We Soar to Greater Heights of<br />

Endless Possibilities, Toward a Preferred Future."<br />

• Participated on a nurse graduate research paper on Filipino nurses.<br />

• Co-sponsored the <strong>PNAA</strong>IPNA International and supported <strong>PNAA</strong> National conferences.<br />

• Supported Philippine Consul General and Ambassador initiatives.<br />

4. Unify Filipino Nurses in the USA and its territories.<br />

• PNAI premier Nurse Excellence Award on Oct. 15, 2005; eight nurses<br />

• awarded.<br />

• Visibility through publicity; In <strong>2004</strong>-2005 PNAI was featured in the<br />

• Illinois Chart, Nursing Spectrum, local newspapers; Chicago Tribune and<br />

• almost all Filipino newspaper journals.<br />

• Initiated "Liaison program" to reach members at the grassroots.<br />

• PNAI had the HIGHEST INCREASE OF <strong>PNAA</strong> MEMBERS AT THE END<br />

• OF 2005 OF 300%; A HISTORICAL FEAT!<br />

5. Facilitate professional and cultural adjustment of new foreign graduate nurses through<br />

collaboration with agencies and organizations. .<br />

• Provided acculturation program of new foreign nurse graduates in collaboration with NCLEX<br />

reviewer agency and law firm.<br />

• President consulted/interviewed by the press for publication on Filipino foreign nurse graduate<br />

6. Participate actively in professional and cultural activities with professional<br />

organizations and agencies in the community and globally.<br />

• Affiliated/supported Illinois Nurses Association. Gloria Simon, INA delegate for seven<br />

consecutive terms, originator of the resolution on "Patient/Staff ratio" that is in the state<br />

legislature, was appointed Commissioner in 2005, then as member of the INA Board of<br />

Directors.
