TRINITY UNIVERSITY<br />

THE MINOR<br />

Classical Studies at <strong>Trinity</strong> is highly interdisciplinary in nature, bringing together the fields of<br />

history, literature, religion, philosophy, speech and drama, art history, archaeology,<br />

anthropology, political science, and so forth. The Department of Classical Studies offers three<br />

minors: Ancient Mediterranean Studies, Greek, and Latin. Ancient Mediterranean Studies is a<br />

minor in ancient culture and does not require a language, although language courses do<br />

count toward this degree. In addition to the <strong>University</strong>’s regulations for minors, students<br />

should complete the following Departmental requirements.<br />

ANCIENT MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES<br />

Completion of at least 18 hours of courses chosen from those listed below under Classics<br />

Courses in English, Greek, or Latin, of which at least 9 hours must be in the upper division.<br />

Ancient Mediterranean Studies is a minor in ancient culture and does not require a language,<br />

although language courses do count toward this degree. No more than 3 hours may overlap<br />

with the student’s major. A minimum of 12 hours toward the minor must be completed at<br />

<strong>Trinity</strong>.<br />

GREEK<br />

Completion of at least 18 hours in Greek, of which at least 9 must be in the upper division. A<br />

minimum of 12 hours toward the minor must be completed at <strong>Trinity</strong>.<br />

LATIN<br />

Completion of at least 18 hours in Latin, of which at least 9 must be in the upper division. A<br />

minimum of 12 hours toward the minor must be completed at <strong>Trinity</strong>.<br />

Departmental requirements:<br />

The Department of Classical Studies offers an Honors Program in Classics. The<br />

requirements for Honors in Classical Studies are the same as the <strong>University</strong><br />

requirements. For further information, please consult the chair of the department as early<br />

as possible in the first semester of the junior year.<br />

LANGUAGE SKILLS<br />

All courses under the heading Classics Courses in English are taught through the medium of<br />

English translation and no knowledge of Greek or Latin is required. Courses under the<br />

headings Greek and Latin are directed to the acquisition of those languages, respectively.<br />

Topics in Classical Studies<br />

Study of topics related to the ancient Mediterranean world and its legacy, such as<br />

Latin and Greek elements in the English language, classical civilization, etc. May<br />

be taken more than once, provided that topics vary.<br />

Greek Literature in Translation<br />

A study of certain major works of Greek literature in their entirety, and a survey of<br />

the major Greek authors and of their contribution to European literature, in<br />

translation.<br />
