This concentration is designed for students who are interested in public policy<br />

and policy analysis.<br />

a. Lower division requirements (9 hours).<br />

b. Distribution of courses in five subfields:<br />

The student is required to take at least one course in each of the<br />

discipline’s five major fields (American Politics, Comparative Politics,<br />

International Politics, Public Law, and Political Theory. Judicial Process<br />

can be used to satisfy the Public Law requirement). Lower division<br />

courses may be used to satisfy this distribution requirement.<br />

c. Seven upper division courses in American Politics to include the<br />

following: Policy Analysis and the Policymaking Process, the Federal<br />

System, Bureaucratic Politics (21 hours).<br />

d. Research Methods in Political Science (PLSI 3372) or a research<br />

methods course offered by another department that is approved by the<br />

advisor (3 hours).<br />

e. ECON 1311, 1312 (6 hours).<br />

f. Two courses that examine policy making and implementation from the<br />

perspective of another discipline (6 hours):<br />

ECON 3323 The Economics of Government<br />

ECON 3330 Economics and the Environment<br />

ECON 3334 Urban Economics<br />

ECON 3336 Antitrust Economics<br />

ECON 3338 Government Regulation of Business<br />

SOCI 3324 Crime and Delinquency<br />

SOCI 3339 The Welfare State<br />

III.<br />

Completion of Senior Experience<br />

All majors must complete a course that satisfies the requirement for the Senior<br />

Experience. Options that are available to majors include:<br />

PLSI 4390 (Senior Seminar in Political Science).<br />

An approved Senior Experience course in a second major.<br />

GNED 4300 (Senior Interdisciplinary Seminar).<br />

GNED 4301 (Senior Synthesis).<br />

IV.<br />

Electives sufficient to total 124 semester hours.<br />

GUIDELINES FOR ACCEPTANCE OF MAJORS<br />

1. Completion of two lower division courses with grades of C or better.<br />

2. An overall grade point average of at least 2.0.<br />

THE MINOR<br />

The requirements for the Minor:<br />

A minimum of 18 semester hours of political science. Six hours shall be lower division; the<br />

remaining 12 shall be upper division. All courses shall be selected under the supervision of a<br />

departmental advisor.<br />
