First <strong>Year</strong> Seminar<br />

An interdisciplinary seminar focusing on a variable theme, required of all first-year<br />

students.<br />

Readings in Science and Religion<br />

An examination of key issues regarding human nature and our place in the universe<br />

from religious, literary, and scientific perspectives, focusing on major debates in the<br />

discourse between science and religion in Western culture over the last five<br />

hundred years. Involves readings from primary texts, discussion of ideas in the<br />

texts both orally and in writing, and instruction in analytical and argumentative<br />

writing. Offered to first-year students as alternative to First <strong>Year</strong> Seminar (GNED<br />

1300).<br />

Japanese Perspectives<br />

This course introduces the student to Japanese culture. The course begins with an<br />

inspection of Japanese religions, especially its native Shinto, Buddhism, and Zen.<br />

It includes the development from rule by Emperor through rule by military or shogun<br />

to modern democracy. A third section covers the development of Japanese<br />

aesthetics as seen in its major literary and artistic production, for example, in<br />

poetry, Noh drama, ink-brush painting, pottery, and drama/film. The last section of<br />

the course covers the modern era, from Japan’s reopening to outsiders in the 19th<br />

century to its current place as a world power. The stresses on Japanese social<br />

structures as they adapt to Western influence are viewed through a variety of<br />

means: government policies, societal experiments, novels and films, and so on.<br />
