THE MINOR<br />

The requirements for a minor in Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Spanish are as<br />

follows: Completion of at least 18 semester hours, of which no more than 6 may be<br />

lower division. A minimum of 12 hours toward the minor must be completed at <strong>Trinity</strong>.<br />

THE HONORS PROGRAM<br />

II. Departmental requirements:<br />

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers an Honors Program in<br />

Chinese, French, German, Russian, and Spanish. The requirements for Honors in<br />

Modern Languages and Literatures are the same as the university requirements. A full<br />

description of the program is available in the departmental office.<br />

SELF-INSTRUCTIONAL LANGUAGE PROGRAM<br />

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers self-instructional courses in<br />

critical languages of global and economic importance. Although students will meet with a<br />

native-speaking tutor for 2 hours per week, the self-instructional nature of these courses<br />

demands that students have a demonstrated ability to learn a foreign language and be highly<br />

motivated and disciplined. Registration is by consent of the Director only. The courses for<br />

which students may enroll are the following:<br />

the language studied, for example:<br />

None of these courses may count toward fulfillment of the university language requirement.<br />

Japanese Perspectives<br />

This course introduces the student to Japanese culture in its religious, political,<br />

aesthetic, and social dimensions especially as each is affected by Western<br />

influences. (Also listed at ANTH 1303 and GNED 1303.)<br />

International Cinema<br />

This course focuses on the cultural and critical analysis of international films as an<br />

expression of particular artistic genres and/or styles within specific historical,<br />

ideological, and cultural contexts. Films selected have achieved wide, critical<br />

acclaim; others reveal unique and important visions of human experience; while still<br />

others are selected for their political, ideological, or sociological significance.<br />

Students should develop an awareness that the medium of film has a history and<br />

that its history is not confined to national boundaries. (Also listed as ARTH 2301,<br />

COMM 2301, ENGL 2300, and FILM 2301.)<br />

Chinese Literature in Translation I<br />

A study of selected works of classical Chinese literature.<br />

Chinese Literature in Translation II<br />

A study of selected works of Modern Chinese literature.<br />

ML&L 3302 and CHIN 4321 cannot both be taken for credit unless the topics differ.<br />
