Nationalism and Ethnicity in World Politics<br />

An examination of the politics of nationalism and ethnicity in one or more world<br />

regions including countries in the Third World.<br />

Prerequisites: Either PLSI 1341 or 1331 or 1332, or consent of the instruction.<br />

International Law<br />

An introductory survey of public international law as practiced by states and<br />

international organizations, with an emphasis on jurisdiction, treaties, territory, law<br />

of the sea, human rights, economy, wars, and disputes as well as other topics.<br />

Prerequisite: PLSI 1341 or consent of instructor.<br />

Violent Conflict in International Politics<br />

Explores the nature, genesis, development, conclusion, and impacts of violent<br />

conflict through a detailed examination of a single war or a set of similar and/or<br />

related conflicts that, individually or together, had a significant impact on world<br />

politics. Students may take this course more than once provided the topics vary.<br />

Prerequisite: PLSI 1341.<br />

The Middle East and the World<br />

An examination of international relations and major foreign policy issues among the<br />

nations of the Middle East and between these nations and the rest of the world.<br />

Prerequisite: PLSI 1341 or 1331 or 1332, or HIST 3350 or 3354.<br />

The United States and World Order<br />

An examination of US foreign policy and actions in a globalizing world.<br />

Prerequisite: PLSI 1341 or 3313 or consent of instructor.<br />

Geography and World Politics<br />

An interdisciplinary examination of the geographical basis of world politics,<br />

stressing the territorial state, contemporary challenges to the state, and<br />

“geographic literacy.”<br />

Prerequisite: PLSI 1341 or consent of instructor.<br />

Gender and International Relations<br />

This course looks at the impact of gender on the construction of theories of<br />

international relations and the conduct of foreign policies.<br />

Prerequisite: PLSI 1341 or WAGS 2310.<br />

The Politics of Development<br />

This course examines development as a historical process affecting politics,<br />

culture, economics, and society. It looks at early as well as middle and late<br />

developers, and explores reasons for different developmental trajectories.<br />

Prerequisites: PLSI 1341, 1332, or 1331.<br />

Special Topics in International Politics<br />

Occasionally courses will be offered on special topics. Students are encouraged to<br />

bring to the attention of the Department Chair topics they wish to have offered.<br />

Students may take this course more than once provided the topics vary.<br />

International Political Economy<br />

An examination of the development and operation of the modern international<br />

political economy, with an emphasis on the politics of international investment,<br />

finance, trade, and aid.<br />

Prerequisite: PLSI 1341 or ECON 3340 or 3346 or 3347.<br />
