The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers courses leading to the degree<br />
of Bachelor of Arts with a major in Chinese, French, German, Russian, or Spanish. Programs<br />
are also available in French, German, and Spanish as teaching fields under the<br />
interdepartmental major for teachers in secondary schools. Italian is offered on the<br />
elementary and intermediate levels. Courses in Greek and Latin are the responsibility of the<br />
Department of Classical Studies.<br />
THE MAJOR<br />
In order to be granted full acceptance for admission to a major in Chinese, French, German,<br />
Russian, or Spanish, a student must have completed the 3301 course in that language with<br />
a grade of C or better.<br />
CHINESE<br />
The requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts with a major in Chinese are as follows:<br />

Departmental requirements:<br />
A. Completion of 21 semester hours, of which no more than 3 may be lower division<br />
(2302). Upper division will include CHIN 4351.<br />
B. Completion of one of the following additional requirements:<br />
1. Nine additional semester hours of upper division courses in Chinese.<br />
Students have the option of substituting up to 9 semester hours from the<br />
following: CHIN 2311, HIST 3371, ML&L 3301, 3302, PHIL 3328, and RELI<br />
3333.<br />
2. The lower division courses, or the equivalent, and at least 3 semester hours<br />
of upper division courses in a second foreign language.<br />
C. The Senior Experience requirement can be satisfied by completing GNED 4300<br />
Senior Interdisciplinary Seminar, GNED 4301 Senior Synthesis, or CHIN 4001<br />
Senior Experience. The first two options will be in addition to the 30 (or 21) hours<br />
required for the Chinese major, while the third will not.<br />
