Introduction to Opera<br />
A study of opera through an examination of selected works, beginning in the<br />
seventeenth century and continuing through the present. Introduces the basic<br />
concepts and conventions of the art form, while investigating the dramatic, musical,<br />
and literary qualities that make opera such an emotionally powerful theatrical<br />
experience. Explores such operas as The Magic Flute, Carmen, and Wozzeck, as<br />
well as stagecraft, musical symbolism, and production design. Previous musical<br />
experience is not necessary, but students will be expected to develop discriminating<br />
listening skills to enhance their understanding and appreciation of the material.<br />
Women and Music<br />
A historical, sociological, and artistic study of the contributions of women to the<br />
history of music in the western world from the ninth century to the present. Ability to<br />
read music helpful.<br />
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor or MUSC 1301, 1340.<br />
Jazz History and Styles<br />
A study of the origins, evolution, and emergence of jazz as one of America’s<br />
significant contributions to world music. The course will emphasize studies of<br />
representative works illustrating principal styles in the development of jazz as an<br />
accepted form of musical expression in American culture.<br />
African American Music<br />
A survey of African American influences on the musical heritage of the United<br />
States. Emphasis will be given to the relation of musical style and performance to<br />
changing cultural, philosophical, and technological conditions. Popular music styles<br />
as well as art music by African American composers will be discussed. Previous<br />
musical experience is not necessary, but students will be expected to develop<br />
discriminating listening skills to enhance their understanding and appreciation of<br />
the material.<br />
Music Cultures of the World<br />
This course explores the music of various cultures around the world. Using the case<br />
study approach, students will learn about the music and sociology of selected<br />
regions that may include West Africa, Asia, India, and the American Southwest.<br />
Students will undertake fieldwork in San Antonio to gain practical experience in<br />
ethnomusicological fieldwork. This is an introductory course appropriate for nonmajors<br />
as well as music students. No prior musical experience is required, but<br />
students without musical backgrounds must learn a vocabulary of terms for<br />
describing musical sound. (Also listed as ANTH 1351.)<br />
American Musical Theater<br />
Studies of the source materials, stage and film adaptations, and integration of<br />
musical and dramatic elements that led to the development of the Broadway<br />
musical as an American tradition.<br />
Music History I: Ancient Greece to Mozart<br />
A survey of music in the Western art music tradition, beginning with ancient Greece<br />
and continuing through the music of the late eighteenth century. Important<br />
composers covered include Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Palestrina, Josquin,<br />
Haydn, and Mozart. Although designed as Part I of a two-semester history<br />
sequence, this course may be taken independently.<br />
Prerequisite: MUSC 1404 or consent of instructor.<br />
