THE MAJOR<br />

The requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts with a major in Political Science are as<br />

follows:<br />

I. The common curriculum<br />

Departmental requirements:<br />

A. Lower division requirements: 9 hours<br />

One course from three of the following fields:<br />

1. American Politics (PLSI 1301, 1302, 1303)<br />

2. Comparative Politics (PLSI 1331, 1332)<br />

3. International Politics (PLSI 1341)<br />

4. Political Theory (PLSI 1361)<br />

B. Political Science majors may choose among five separate curricula.<br />

1. General Political Science<br />

Students who have a general interest in Political Science may choose to major<br />

in the discipline without selecting a concentration. Majors who choose this<br />

option must meet the following requirements:<br />

a. Satisfaction of the lower division requirement (9 hours).<br />

b. Distribution of courses in five subfields: The student is required to take at<br />

least one course in each of the discipline’s five major fields (American<br />

Politics, Comparative Politics, International Politics, Public Law, and<br />

Political Theory. Judicial Process can be used to satisfy the Public Law<br />

requirement). Lower division courses may be used to satisfy this<br />

distribution requirement.<br />

c. Eight upper division courses (24 hours).<br />

2. Comparative/International Politics<br />

This concentration is designed for majors who have a primary interest in<br />

international relations and/or comparative politics. In addition to preparing<br />

students for graduate work in these subfields of the discipline or related<br />

disciplines, this concentration is designed for students interested in<br />

international affairs.<br />

a. Satisfaction of the lower division requirement (9 hours).<br />

b. One upper division course in American Politics or Public Law (3 hours).<br />

c. One upper division course in Political Theory (3 hours).<br />
