SU) Introduction to basic counseling techniques and skills<br />

common to multiple theoretical perspectives.<br />

CNED5343 Counseling Practicum (FA, SP, SU)<br />

Supervised counseling practice. Prerequisite: CNED 5333<br />

and CNED 5323.<br />

CNED5363 Dynamics <strong>of</strong> Group Counseling (FA,<br />

SU) Therapeutic and other theoretical information is presented<br />

regarding group process and the counselor’s role in<br />

that process. An experiential group experience is required.<br />

Prerequisite: CNED 5333 and CNED 5323.<br />

CNED5373 Ethical and Legal Issues in<br />

Counseling (FA, SP, SU) (Formerly CNED 5372)<br />

Review <strong>of</strong> ethical and legal standards governing pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

counselor training, research, and counseling practice; including<br />

client rights; confidentiality; the client-counselor relationship;<br />

and counseling research, training, and supervision.<br />

Prerequisite: CNED 5103 and CNED 5203.<br />

CNED5383 Crisis Intervention Counseling (FA,<br />

SP, SU) (Formerly CNED 5382) Analysis and application <strong>of</strong><br />

short-term counseling intervention strategies in crisis situations,<br />

with special attention to incidents involving rape, physical,<br />

or emotional abuse, divorce, suicidal depression, grief,<br />

martial or family instability, and violent conflict. Prerequisite:<br />

CNED 5333 and CNED 5323.<br />

CNED5403 Case Management and Counseling<br />

(IR) Procedures in case management utilizing both clinical<br />

and interview data in assisting children, adolescents, and<br />

adults in educational, vocational, personal, and social planning.<br />

Prerequisite: CNED 5303 and CNED 5323 and CNED<br />

5333.<br />

CNED5513 Counseling and Human Diversity (FA,<br />

SP, SU) Examination <strong>of</strong> human and cultural diversity,<br />

children and adolescents including the process, theories,<br />

techniques, and materials applicable to children and adolescents<br />

in a pluralistic society. Prerequisite: CNED 5323 and<br />

CNED6523 Gender Issues in Counseling and<br />

Human Development (FA, SP, SU) A study <strong>of</strong> gender<br />

and sex role issues pertinent to the counseling pr<strong>of</strong>ession,<br />

and their effect on the development <strong>of</strong> children, adults, and<br />

young and older adults. Students utilize Gender Fair<br />

Guidelines for counseling as presented by the American<br />

Theory (SP) Study <strong>of</strong> the nature <strong>of</strong> the communication<br />

process as it is reflected in the individual, in interpersonal<br />

settings, in one-to-many situations, and in the mass media.<br />

COMM3353 Argumentation: Reason in<br />

Communication (FA, SP, SU) Concepts characterizing<br />

rational discourse, with a concern for examining validity and<br />

fallacy. Consider traditional and contemporary models for<br />

analyzing argument, including an examination <strong>of</strong> the philosophy<br />

<strong>of</strong> argument and a practical inquiry into the uses <strong>of</strong> argument<br />

in contemporary rhetorical discourse.<br />

COMM3363 Nonverbal Communication (SP)<br />

Creates an understanding <strong>of</strong> the functions <strong>of</strong> nonverbal cues<br />

operating in human communication processes and develops<br />

familiarity with recent research in the field <strong>of</strong> nonverbal communication.<br />

COMM3383 Persuasion (FA) Introduction to theories<br />

<strong>of</strong> persuasion with emphasis on application and effect.<br />

COMM3423 Science Fiction Film (SP) This class<br />

concentrates on how science fiction in various communication<br />

media influences and is, in turn, influenced by broad features<br />

<strong>of</strong> culture life. The class considers the impact <strong>of</strong> science<br />

fiction on science fact, the military, space travel, religion,<br />

race, gender, social class, education, politics, technology,<br />

and fashion styles.<br />

COMM3433 Family Communication (IR) Study <strong>of</strong><br />

the nature, functions, and management <strong>of</strong> communication<br />

patterns in the family. Focus is on understanding routine<br />

interpersonal interactions, conflict patterns, authority structures,<br />

and decision-making processes within the context <strong>of</strong><br />

the contemporary family.<br />

COMM3443 Introduction to Rhetorical Theory<br />

(FA, SP) Interpretive-critical study <strong>of</strong> rhetoric in public contexts.<br />

Prerequisite: COMM 1313.<br />

COMM3673 Mediated Communication (FA, SP)<br />

Focuses on media messages and their social/cultural effects.<br />

Includes a critical examination <strong>of</strong> media institutions and the<br />

ways they vie for audiences. Other topics include the ways<br />

people construct meaning from messages, media’s influence<br />

on attitudes, media’s role in cultural life, and audiences as<br />

critical consumers <strong>of</strong> media.<br />

SP) An introduction to the theory, processes, and management<br />

<strong>of</strong> communication in organizations, with opportunities<br />
