LARC2346 Landscape Architecture Design IV<br />

(SP) (Formerly LARC 3345) Expansion <strong>of</strong> abilities to analyze<br />

existing conditions <strong>of</strong> site and develop methods for interpreting<br />

and synthesizing information and perceptions into<br />

spatial design proposals. Emphasis on design form and the<br />

use <strong>of</strong> meaning and landscape narrative applied to increased<br />

scale projects within a larger or more complex context. Studio<br />

and lecture. Prerequisite: LARC 2336 and LARC 3413.<br />

LARC2714 Landscape Architecture Construction<br />

I (SP) (Grading) Introduction to landscape architectural<br />

construction with an emphasis on grading, earthwork computations,<br />

and technical drawing skills. Introduction to roadway<br />

alignment, the land survey system, and construction documents.<br />

Lecture and laboratory.<br />

group study and practicum and travel involving landscape<br />

design, history, and environmental analysis. May be repeated<br />

LARC3356 Landscape Architecture Design V (FA)<br />

Investigation <strong>of</strong> social behavior as applied to program and<br />

design that serves human needs. Projects reflect increased<br />

scope, scale, and resolution with a detailed design component.<br />

Studio and lecture. Prerequisite: LARC 2113, LARC<br />

2346 and LARC 2714; and acceptance into the pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

program.<br />

LARC3366 Landscape Architecture Design VI<br />

(SP) Investigation <strong>of</strong> ecological determinism, historic and<br />

contemporary planning, and sustainable design as distinct<br />

approaches to landscape architecture. Studio and lecture.<br />

III (SP) (Structures) Introduction into the design and fabrication<br />

methods <strong>of</strong> structures in the landscape. Emphasis on<br />

statics in calculating sizes and selection <strong>of</strong> materials for freestanding<br />

and retaining walls, and wooden structures.<br />

Advanced technical drawing component and computer integration<br />

<strong>of</strong> drawing production. Lecture and laboratory.<br />

LARC3734H Honors Landscape Architecture<br />

Construction III (SP) (Structures) Introduction into the<br />

design and fabrication methods <strong>of</strong> structures in the landscape.<br />

Emphasis on statics in calculating sizes and selection<br />

<strong>of</strong> materials for free-standing and retaining walls, and wooden<br />

structures. Advanced technical drawing component and<br />

computer integration <strong>of</strong> drawing production. Lecture and laboratory.<br />

Prerequisite: LARC 3723.<br />

LARC3813 Trees and Plants <strong>of</strong> Zone 7 (IR)<br />

Identification and study <strong>of</strong> horticultural and structural characteristics<br />

<strong>of</strong> trees, shrubs, vines, and groundcovers in Zone 7<br />

(Wyman). <strong>Course</strong> may be taught in Garvan Woodland<br />

Gardens in Hot Springs.<br />

LARC3821 Study Abroad Preparation (SP)<br />

Orientation to the geography, history, and culture <strong>of</strong> the countries<br />

and sites to be studies in the study abroad program.<br />

LARC3914 Planting Design I (SP) Introduction to<br />

small scale projects involving use <strong>of</strong> plant materials in relation<br />

to other landscape elements, formulation <strong>of</strong> a vocabulary<br />

<strong>of</strong> plant materials and preparation <strong>of</strong> integrated planting plans<br />

and applicable specifications. Includes laboratory.<br />

LARC3924 Ecological Design (IR) Continuation <strong>of</strong><br />

LARC 3914 emphasizing a change in scale <strong>of</strong> projects to<br />

include medium and large scale projects, and increasing<br />

complexity in dealing with more complicated and varied<br />

planting designs and applicable specifications. Includes laboratory.<br />

Prerequisite: LARC 3914 and HORT 3103.<br />

LARC3933 Cultural Landscape <strong>Studies</strong> (SU) The<br />

examination <strong>of</strong> landscape forms, and their historic and evolutionary<br />

development. Includes study <strong>of</strong> cultural, political, and<br />

site context influences. Required field trip component <strong>of</strong> study<br />

abroad. Prerequisite: LARC 3413 and LARC 3821.<br />

LARC4123 Urban Form <strong>Studies</strong> (SU) The examination<br />

<strong>of</strong> urban, village, and suburban form and its influencing<br />

forces. Includes study <strong>of</strong> cultural forces, technological developments,<br />

and physical shape, scale, and materials that<br />

define urban areas. Required field trip component <strong>of</strong> study<br />

abroad. Prerequisite: LARC 3413 and LARC 3921.<br />

LARC4343 Planning Approaches to Geographic<br />

Information Systems (IR) A survey <strong>of</strong> the decision<br />

making processes required for planning with geographic<br />

information systems. Review <strong>of</strong> the history <strong>of</strong> suitability mapping<br />

as the basis for computerized land planning models.<br />

Placement <strong>of</strong> modern suitability studies in the realm <strong>of</strong><br />

regional planning through examination <strong>of</strong> criteria establishment,<br />

weighting, public input and data restrictions.<br />

Prerequisite: GEOG 4543.<br />

LARC4376 Landscape Architecture Design VII<br />

(FA) (Formerly LARC 4375) Synthesis <strong>of</strong> all previous<br />

course work; an introduction to the theory and practice <strong>of</strong><br />

larger scale planning with an emphasis on design <strong>of</strong> systems<br />

in urbanizing environments. Studio and lecture. Prerequisite:<br />

LARC 3366 and LARC 4413.<br />

LARC4376H Honors Landscape Architecture<br />

Design VII (FA) Synthesis <strong>of</strong> all previous course work; an<br />

introduction to the theory and practice <strong>of</strong> larger scale planning<br />

with an emphasis on design <strong>of</strong> systems in urbanizing<br />

environments. Studio and lecture. Prerequisite: LARC 3366<br />

and LARC 4413.<br />

LARC4383 Senior Project Preparation (SP)<br />

(Formerly LARC 4381) Definition and planning <strong>of</strong> personally<br />

selected senior demonstration project. Requires full documentation<br />

<strong>of</strong> topical research, program development, site<br />

data collection, site analysis, and site project base maps.<br />

Studio and lecture. Prerequisite: LARC 4376<br />

LARC4383H Honors Senior Project Preparation<br />

(SP) Definition and planning <strong>of</strong> personally selected senior<br />

laboratory 6 hours per week.<br />

LARC5043 Landscape Architecture Seminar (IR)<br />

The role <strong>of</strong> the landscape architect in contemporary society;<br />

how this is affected by technological change and awareness<br />

<strong>of</strong> ecological problems. Group discussions, individual<br />

research projects, and guest lectures. Prerequisite: fourthyear<br />

standing.<br />

LARC5053 Historic Landscape Preservation (IR)<br />

Survey <strong>of</strong> historic preservation as a pr<strong>of</strong>ession and the<br />

emerging cultural landscape preservation movement.<br />

Introduction to preservation principles as described by the<br />

Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Interiors Standards and Guidelines. Analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> case studies will reinforce basic philosophies and introduce<br />

preservation approaches. Prerequisite: LARC 3413 and<br />

LARC 4413.<br />

LARC5063 Alternative Stormwater Management<br />

(IR) Introduction to the role <strong>of</strong> alternative stormwater management<br />

techniques including constructed wetlands,<br />

bioswales, rainwater harvesting, and other stormwater reduction<br />

techniques. Emphasis on constructed wetlands and multidisciplinary<br />

team approach to problem solving. Lecture and<br />

laboratory.<br />

LARC5386 Landscape Architecture Design VIII<br />

(Senior Demonstration Project) (FA) (Formerly<br />

LARC 5385) Advanced design studio with an emphasis on<br />

individual research and design resolution. Includes all<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> design process: inventory, programming, graphic<br />

documentation, formal oral presentation, and a written report.<br />

Prerequisite: LARC 4383 and LARC 4376.<br />

LARC5613 Landscape Architectural Practice and<br />

Project Manual (FA) Pr<strong>of</strong>essional ethics; <strong>of</strong>fice organization,<br />

client, contractor and landscape architect relationships;<br />

contracts and documents; review <strong>of</strong> bidding and contractual<br />

documents, including technical specifications.<br />

(LAST) LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES<br />

LAST2013 Latin American <strong>Studies</strong> (FA) This course<br />

provides an interdisciplinary introduction to Latin America.<br />

Drawing on Latin American literature, history, sociology, and<br />

political science, the course examines the broad forces that<br />

have shaped the region.<br />

LAST3013 Modern Latin American Literature in<br />

Translation (IR) This course introduces the rich cultural<br />

diversity and sociohistorical complexity <strong>of</strong> Latin America,<br />

through the exploration <strong>of</strong> outstanding and representative<br />

examples <strong>of</strong> the region’s modern literature.<br />

LAST4003 Latin American <strong>Studies</strong> Colloquium<br />

(SP) An interdepartmental colloquium with an annual<br />

change in subject <strong>of</strong> investigation, required <strong>of</strong> all Latin<br />

LAST4173 The Latin American City (IR) This<br />

course examines the social, political, and cultural aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

the modern Latin American city from an interdisciplinary perspective.<br />

The course includes an introduction to urban studies<br />

concepts, and each semester is organized around a specific<br />

set <strong>of</strong> case studies. (Same as ANTH 4173, GEOG 4173,<br />

HIST 4173) May be repeated.<br />

LATN1013 Elementary Latin II (SP) A continuation <strong>of</strong><br />

the rudiments <strong>of</strong> classical Latin, with concentration on grammar,<br />

vocabulary, and syntax. Short selections from ancient<br />

authors lead to basic reading ability. Prerequisite: LATN 1003<br />

or equivalent.<br />

LATN2003 Petronius’ Satyricon (FA) Development <strong>of</strong><br />

reading skills through selections from Satyricon, and an introduction<br />

to imperial history and culture through critical study<br />

<strong>of</strong> the novel in translation. Prerequisite: LATN 1013 or equivalent.<br />
