<strong>of</strong> graduate student research. Formal presentations are<br />

AGEC502V Special Topics (1-3) (IR) Advanced studies<br />

<strong>of</strong> selected topics in agricultural economics not available<br />

(1-6) (IR) On-the-job application <strong>of</strong> skills developed in the<br />

M.S. program (credit/non-credit only).<br />

AGEC5113 Agricultural Marketing Analysis (SU)<br />

<strong>Course</strong> prepares students for some <strong>of</strong> the more common<br />

tasks in market analysis as undertaken by pr<strong>of</strong>essional agricultural<br />

economists in industry, government, and academic<br />

institutions. Major emphasis is on the analytical procedures<br />

and techniques required in short- and long-term outlook<br />

work; forecasting and projecting supply, demand and prices;<br />

and optimal market organization. Prerequisite: AGEC 5303.<br />

AGEC5143 Financial Management in Agriculture<br />

(IR) Covers advanced topics in agricultural finance. The<br />

general focus <strong>of</strong> the course is the financial management <strong>of</strong><br />

non-corporate firms. Covers the basic tools <strong>of</strong> financial analysis<br />

including financial arithmetic, asset evaluation under risk,<br />

and financial analysis and planning using econometric models.<br />

Such topics covered include management <strong>of</strong> current<br />

assets, capital budgeting, capital structure, and institutions<br />

involved in agricultural finance. Prerequisite: graduate standing.<br />

AGEC5153 The Economics <strong>of</strong> Agricultural Policy<br />

(SP) Application <strong>of</strong> welfare criteria and economic analyses<br />

to the problems and policies affecting resource adjustments<br />

in agriculture. Existing programs and alternative proposals<br />

are evaluated for both short and long term viewpoints, under<br />

the criterion <strong>of</strong> resource use and income distribution within<br />

agriculture or between agriculture and the rest <strong>of</strong> the economy.<br />

Prerequisite: graduate standing.<br />

AGEC5303 Agricultural Marketing Theory (SP)<br />

Survey <strong>of</strong> the structure <strong>of</strong> agricultural product and factor markets<br />

including a critique <strong>of</strong> theoretical analyses <strong>of</strong> industry<br />

structure, conduct and performance; and a review <strong>of</strong> market<br />

structure research in agricultural industries. Prerequisite:<br />

graduate standing.<br />

AGEC5403 Quantitative Methods for<br />

Agribusiness (FA) Application <strong>of</strong> quantitative techniques<br />

used to support managerial decision-making and resource<br />

allocation in agricultural firms. Provides exposure to mathematical<br />

and statistical tools (regression analysis, mathematical<br />

programming, simulation) used in economic analysis in<br />

agriculture. Emphasis is placed on computer applications<br />

with conceptual linkage to economic theory. Prerequisite:<br />

graduate standing.<br />

AGEC5413 Agribusiness Strategy (FA) Addresses<br />

problems <strong>of</strong> strategy formulation in agribusiness emphasizing<br />

current problems and cases in agriculture. Surveys modern<br />

and classic perspectives on strategy with applications to<br />

agribusiness. Examines the development <strong>of</strong> firm level strategies<br />

within the structure and competitive environment <strong>of</strong> agricultural<br />

firms and industries. Prerequisite: graduate standing.<br />

AGEC5613 Econometrics I (FA) Use <strong>of</strong> economic theory<br />

and statistical methods to estimate economic models.<br />

The single equation model is examined emphasizing multicollinearity,<br />

autocorrelation, heteroskedasticity, binary variables<br />

and distributed lags. An introduction to the simultaneous<br />

systems model is presented. Two 80-minute lecture periods<br />

weekly. (Same as ECON 5613) Prerequisite: MATH 2043<br />

and knowledge <strong>of</strong> matrix methods, which may be acquired as<br />

a corequisite and (AGEC 1103 or ECON 2023) and an introductory<br />

statistics course.<br />

AGEC5623 Econometrics II (SP) Use <strong>of</strong> economic<br />

theory and statistical methods to estimate simultaneous<br />

equation models <strong>of</strong> an economy. Emphasis given to the problem<br />

<strong>of</strong> identification and the methods <strong>of</strong> estimating system<br />

models. Frontier topics are introduced. (Same as ECON<br />

5623) Prerequisite: ECON 5533 and ECON 5613 (or AGEC<br />

5613).<br />

Extension Education (FA) Continuation <strong>of</strong> AGAD<br />

1001, Freshman Orientation, with attention given to sharing<br />

<strong>of</strong> possible solutions to individual problems. Exploration <strong>of</strong><br />

anticipated collegiate experiences for departmental majors as<br />

well as post-graduation opportunities. Student and faculty<br />

interaction is stressed. The class meets during the last half <strong>of</strong><br />

the fall semester twice a week. The class also meets 1 or 2<br />

evenings for up to two hours each time.<br />

AGED102V Special Topics for Freshmen (1-2) (IR)<br />

Topics not covered in other courses or in-depth study <strong>of</strong> a<br />

particular topic. Used primarily with the program for<br />

(FA) A thirty hour field experience designed to give<br />

prospective agricultural education teachers an opportunity to<br />

observe and participate in a variety <strong>of</strong> school settings.<br />

Survey course <strong>of</strong> agricultural youth organizations including 4-<br />

H, FFA, Grange, and others pertaining to membership,<br />

(IR) Methods and techniques in teaching agriculture at the<br />

secondary level. Lecture 2 hours, laboratory 2 hours per<br />

action; methods <strong>of</strong> resolving conflict; ethical considerations<br />

AGED4003 Issues in Agriculture (FA, SP) Lecture<br />

and discussion on local, regional, national and international<br />

issues related to agricultural policy, ethics, environment, society,<br />

and science. Designed for students with at least six<br />

hours <strong>of</strong> upper division agricultural science courses.<br />

study or research for advanced undergraduates in the field <strong>of</strong><br />

AGED4012 Program Development (FA) Principles<br />

and concepts <strong>of</strong> leadership, program organization, supervised<br />

agricultural experience, and advisory committees. This<br />

course is a portion <strong>of</strong> pre-pr<strong>of</strong>essional studies required for<br />

(IR) Theory and practice <strong>of</strong> planning, editing, designing, and<br />

producing publications commonly used in agriculture, extension<br />

Agricultural and Extension Educati on (SP) This<br />

course is designed to provide pre-service teachers <strong>of</strong> agriculture<br />

SU) Scheduled practical field experiences under the supervision<br />

school systems. Emphasis includes classroom preparation,<br />

teaching, and student evaluation. May be repeated for 6<br />

hours. Prerequisite: admission into Clinical Practice.<br />

AGED4843 Methods in Agricultural Laboratories<br />

(SP) Methods and management techniques in all types <strong>of</strong><br />

agricultural laboratories that may be in a secondary agricultural<br />

science program. Emphasis on management <strong>of</strong> students<br />

and facilities, equipment, and materials. Lecture 2 hours, laboratory<br />

4 hours per week. Prerequisite: AGME 2123.<br />

AGED5001 Seminar (SP) Presentations and discussion<br />

<strong>of</strong> graduate student research as well as review <strong>of</strong> current literature<br />

and topics <strong>of</strong> current interest by students and faculty.<br />

Mechanics (IR) Emphasis on shop organization and<br />

Agricultural Organizations (IR) Organizational concepts<br />

<strong>of</strong> leadership; administrative styles and structures;<br />

leadership for boards, committees, governmental bodies, and<br />

review <strong>of</strong> societal and political processes. Prerequisite: graduate<br />

AGED5031 Ethics in Agricultural and Extension<br />

Education (FA) A study <strong>of</strong> ethics as applied to problems<br />

Extension Education (IR) An examination and analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> social and economic events leading to the establishment<br />

and maintenance <strong>of</strong> federal, state, county, and local agricultural<br />

A course involving activities emphasizing the practical application<br />

Sciences (SP, Odd years) Logical structure and the<br />

method <strong>of</strong> science. Basic elements <strong>of</strong> research design;<br />

observation, measurement, analytic method, interpretation,<br />

verification, presentation <strong>of</strong> results. Applications to research<br />

in economic or sociological problems <strong>of</strong> agriculture and<br />

human environmental sciences. (Same as AGEC 5013,<br />

AGED5473 Interpreting Social Data in<br />

Agriculture (FA) The development <strong>of</strong> competencies in<br />

analyzing, interpreting and reporting the results <strong>of</strong> analyses<br />

<strong>of</strong> social science data in agriculturally related pr<strong>of</strong>essions.<br />

Students will select appropriate analysis techniques and procedures<br />

for various problems, analyze data, and interpret<br />

and report the results <strong>of</strong> statistical analyses in narrative and<br />

tabular form. Prerequisite: AGST 4023 (or EDFD 5393) and<br />

AGED 5463 (or RSOC 5463 or HESC 5463 or AGED 5013).<br />
