and outstanding and representative works in 20th century<br />
prose and poetry, from the Mexican Revolution and the<br />
avant-garde to the contemporary boom and post-boom.<br />
SPAN5533 Mexican Literature (FA, SP, SU) An<br />
exploration <strong>of</strong> the special features and particular qualities if<br />
Mexican literature, as one <strong>of</strong> the most representative and<br />
complex <strong>of</strong> the Latin American national literatures. Includes<br />
an historical survey, but each class will focus on selected topics<br />
and issues especially in modern Mexican literature and<br />

course with applications from many fields. Emphasis<br />
on understanding the nature <strong>of</strong> statistical orderliness implied<br />
by probability laws. Statistical analysis is treated as a means<br />
<strong>of</strong> decision making in the face <strong>of</strong> uncertainty.<br />
STAT3013 Introduction to Probability and<br />
Statistics (FA, SP, SU) A calculus-based introduction to<br />
the foundations <strong>of</strong> probability and statistics. Emphasis is<br />
placed upon understanding elementary properties <strong>of</strong> probabilities,<br />
events, statistical densities and distributions, properties<br />
<strong>of</strong> random variables, law <strong>of</strong> large numbers, and their relationship<br />
to sampling and statistical inference. Prerequisite:<br />

Considers optimum techniques <strong>of</strong> simple random, stratified<br />
random, cluster, systematic and multistage sampling from<br />
finite populations subject to cost precision constraints. Wide<br />

STAT5322 Statistical Packages (FA, SP) Emphasis<br />
on use <strong>of</strong> digital computer to perform statistical data analysis<br />
through the use <strong>of</strong> integrated statistical packages. Instruction<br />
includes use <strong>of</strong> the SAS, SPSS, and BMD packages. Data<br />
management operations as well as formal statistical procedures<br />
such as ANOVA and regression are considered.<br />

(SP) A modern treatment, including extensions <strong>of</strong> classical<br />
