and other international law dealing with conservation<br />

<strong>of</strong> natural resources and pollution <strong>of</strong> the environment;<br />

enforcement and compliance problems; dispute resolution;<br />

and individual rights and remedies.<br />

<strong>of</strong> the role <strong>of</strong> the law in determining access to and regulation<br />

<strong>of</strong> the quality <strong>of</strong> services provided by the health care industry.<br />

LAWW7252 Freedom <strong>of</strong> Information Seminar (IR)<br />

Examination <strong>of</strong> federal and state laws governing public<br />

access to records and meetings, as well as constitutional<br />

issues pertaining to such access. The process <strong>of</strong> obtaining<br />

access, including litigation, is also considered. A research<br />

paper is required.<br />

LAWW7343 Law and the Internet (FA, SP, SU) A<br />

survey course dealing with an array <strong>of</strong> legal issues surrounding<br />

the Internet, including contract, crime, copyright, free<br />

speech, and privacy.<br />

LAWW7352 Privacy Law: Selected Topics (FA, SP,<br />

SU) Focus on areas <strong>of</strong> current concern and issues that are<br />

emerging in the law <strong>of</strong> privacy. Specific topics vary from year<br />

to year. These include such subjects as the nature <strong>of</strong> the individual’s<br />

right to privacy, protection <strong>of</strong> privacy under the constitution<br />

and by private remedy, impacts and intrusions upon<br />

the right caused by governmental activities and technological<br />

developments (such as computer and data bases).<br />

Comparisons with other legal systems are made. Completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Constitutional Law courses is highly recommended.<br />

LAWW7513 Mass Communication Law (FA, SP,<br />

SU) Legal problems involving the mass media including federal<br />

regulation <strong>of</strong> broadcasting; cable television; differences<br />

between broadcast and print media; limits on speech in such<br />

areas as defamation, privacy, election campaigns and pretrial<br />

publicity. Not <strong>of</strong>fered every year.<br />

LAWW7512 Mass Communications Law Seminar<br />

(IR) Study <strong>of</strong> problems involving the mass media. Topics will<br />

vary but may include the constitutional protection for speech<br />

and press, defamation, invasion <strong>of</strong> privacy, access to government<br />

information, publicity and the courts, copyright, and liability<br />

for emotional and physical harm. A research paper is<br />

required.<br />

LAWW7603 Bankruptcy - Business<br />

Reorganizations (FA, SP, SU) Examines the rules and<br />

tactics governing the reorganization <strong>of</strong> a struggling business<br />

or farm under Chapter 11 <strong>of</strong> the Bankruptcy Code. Students<br />

will reorganize a hypothetical failing business as a part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

course.<br />

LAWW7612 Advanced Consumer Bankruptcy<br />

(FA, SP, SU) Study <strong>of</strong> recent developments in the law <strong>of</strong><br />

bankruptcy as it applies to consumers and nonconsumers<br />

transactions. Prerequisite: LAWW 6602.<br />

LAWW7662 American Indian Law (FA, SP, SU)<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> the domestic federal law <strong>of</strong> the United States as it<br />

applies to Native Americans and their tribes. The general<br />

concept <strong>of</strong> tribal self-determination is the unifying theme <strong>of</strong><br />

the course. Particular topics include tribal sovereignty and<br />

government; American Indian civil rights; administration <strong>of</strong><br />

justice on and <strong>of</strong>f the reservation; American Indian land<br />

claims; land, hunting, and fishing rights; water rights;<br />

American Indian health, education, and welfare; Bureau <strong>of</strong><br />

Indian Affairs; state taxation; individual and tribal treaty rights;<br />

federal Indian policy; and zoning and environmental controls.<br />

LAWW770V Master’s Thesis in Agricultural Law<br />

(1-4) (FA, SP, SU) Research in a specialized area <strong>of</strong> agricultural<br />

law and development <strong>of</strong> a scholarly paper containing<br />

the results <strong>of</strong> this research.<br />

research in agricultural law conducted under the supervision<br />

SP, SU) Selected environmental and resource use problems<br />

in the agricultural sector and the impact <strong>of</strong> environmental<br />

legislation on management and control <strong>of</strong> agricultural<br />

lands. Land use planning proposals, soil conservation laws,<br />

pesticide use controls and issues relating to the preservation<br />

<strong>of</strong> agricultural land also will be included.<br />

(FA, SP, SU) Focus on general business and estate planning<br />

issues <strong>of</strong> special relevance to the farm industry, including<br />

coverage <strong>of</strong> relevant income, excise, and transfer tax provisions.<br />

LAWW7742 Agricultural Taxation (FA, SP, SU)<br />

Income taxation <strong>of</strong> the farm business and a review <strong>of</strong><br />

accounting and income taxation concepts <strong>of</strong> particular importance<br />

to the farming enterprise, including provisions relating<br />

to capital gains treatment <strong>of</strong> agricultural assets, agricultural<br />

“tax shelters”, deferred payment contracts, installment sales,<br />

depreciation <strong>of</strong> farm assets, and commodities trading.<br />

LAWW7753 Agriculture and the Environment (FA,<br />

SP, SU) Study <strong>of</strong> the application <strong>of</strong> environmental law to<br />

agricultural operations. Topics include soil erosion, takings,<br />

pesticide law, the Clean Water Act, the Clear Air Act, common<br />

law nuisance, drainage, wildlife, and endangered<br />

species.<br />

LAWW7752 Agricultural Cooperatives (FA, SP,<br />

SU) Examination <strong>of</strong> the law governing the organization and<br />

operation <strong>of</strong> farmer owned cooperatives, with an emphasis<br />

on New Generation value added processing cooperatives.<br />

Among the topics covered are cooperative taxation and<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> antitrust and securities law applicable to agricultural<br />

cooperatives.<br />

LAWW7763 Agricultural Finance and Credit (FA,<br />

SP, SU) Study <strong>of</strong> the legal issues surrounding the financing<br />

<strong>of</strong> agricultural operations, including credit availability, agricultural<br />

security issues under the Uniform Commercial Code,<br />

and debt restructuring opportunities. Special focus is on lending<br />

options <strong>of</strong>fered by the Farm Service Agency and the<br />

Farm Credit System.<br />

LAWW7773 Water Law (FA, SP, SU) Study <strong>of</strong> real<br />

property principles governing ownership rights in water and<br />

the federal and state statues controlling the use <strong>of</strong> water.<br />

LAWW7783 Agricultural Administrative<br />

Procedure and Practice (FA, SP, SU) Focus on<br />

administrative practice before the USDA and the judicial<br />

review <strong>of</strong> USDA actions involving the federal domestic commodity<br />

programs, federal crop insurance, the Packers and<br />

Stockyards Act, the Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act,<br />

and federal marketing Orders.<br />

LAWW7782 Agricultural Labor Law (FA, SP, SU)<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> the federal laws that govern the employment <strong>of</strong> agricultural<br />

workers, including wage and hour provisions, laws<br />

impacting migrant and seasonal farm workers, immigration<br />

issues, occupational safety and health, and child labor laws.<br />

SP, SU) An examination <strong>of</strong> special problems in the area <strong>of</strong><br />

civil rights and civil liberties law. Coverage will vary, with the<br />

focus on an advanced understanding <strong>of</strong> constitutional guarantees<br />

in areas such as freedom <strong>of</strong> expression, church and<br />

state, substantive and procedural due process, specialized<br />

approaches to the protection <strong>of</strong> discrete or insular groups<br />

study, preparation, and/or review <strong>of</strong> materials, documents,<br />

and matters frequently encountered in the organization, operation,<br />

corporations.<br />

Corporate acquisitions, divestitures and takeovers; corporate<br />

law aspects <strong>of</strong> buying, selling, and merging businesses with<br />

emphasis on federal and state securities law requirements,<br />

antitrust considerations, and other general business and<br />

management considerations.<br />

An examination <strong>of</strong> the unique role and responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Supreme Court <strong>of</strong> the United States, including its jurisdiction<br />

and procedures, theories <strong>of</strong> judicial review, and the political<br />

and social role and impact <strong>of</strong> the Court.<br />

LAWW7852 Forestry Law and Policy (FA, SP, SU)<br />

Introduces legal and policy problems associated both with<br />

public and private forest and rangeland holdings, including a<br />

brief history <strong>of</strong> the public timber and range resource; federal<br />

timber policy; modern forest management law; emphasis on<br />

legal problems <strong>of</strong> private “tree farming,” timber contracts; federal<br />

income tax and the timber owner.<br />

LAWW7862 Food Law (IR) Current problems in federal<br />

regulation <strong>of</strong> food products, drugs, and medical devices, with<br />

strong emphasis on statutory analysis. Examines issues such<br />

as cancer-causing chemicals in the food supply and the marketing<br />

<strong>of</strong> unsafe and ineffective medical products, as well as<br />

the process by which food additives and drugs are licensed<br />

for marketing. Not <strong>of</strong>fered every year.<br />

LAWW7873 Civil Rights Legislation and<br />

Litigation (FA, SP, SU) An intensive survey <strong>of</strong> the various<br />

means by which individual rights and liberties are protected,<br />

and in particular those approaches based upon and<br />

derived from statutory guarantees. Included within this will be<br />

an examination <strong>of</strong> the substantive and procedural aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

litigation initiated pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 1981, 1982, 1983,<br />

1985, and 1988 as a means <strong>of</strong> encouraging litigation<br />

designed to protect individual rights.<br />

LAWW7883 Agricultural Tax Planning (FA, SP,<br />

SU) focus on the specific provisions <strong>of</strong> the Internal Revenue<br />

code relating to farmers and ranchers; accounting methods;<br />

tax “shelters,” deferred payment contracts, depreciation <strong>of</strong><br />

agriculture; unique problems in farm estate and business<br />
