<strong>The</strong> Escuela Nueva Foundation delivers teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g;<br />

conducts research on pedagogical approaches; <strong>and</strong> advises<br />
governments on how to adapt the Escuela Nueva model <strong>in</strong><br />
public schools. Escuela Nueva is a multi-grade rural school<br />
model that promotes leadership <strong>and</strong> cooperation between the<br />
adm<strong>in</strong>istrative body, teachers, community, parents, <strong>and</strong> students.<br />
<strong>The</strong> NIIT, a global IT corporation, works with the state<br />
governments <strong>of</strong> Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, West Bengal, <strong>and</strong><br />
Andhra Pradesh <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>frastructure creation, systems <strong>in</strong>tegration,<br />
facilities management, education delivery, <strong>and</strong> teacher<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, thereby provid<strong>in</strong>g quality computer education <strong>and</strong><br />
computer-aided education to thous<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> schools. Many<br />
<strong>of</strong> the classrooms have become NIIT centers, open to the<br />
school children <strong>and</strong> teachers dur<strong>in</strong>g the day, then used by the<br />
franchise holder <strong>in</strong> the even<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Aga Khan <strong>Education</strong> Foundation provides a wide variety<br />
<strong>of</strong> school improvement programs <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g student-centered<br />
education, computers <strong>in</strong> the classroom, <strong>and</strong> preschool<br />
education. <strong>The</strong> objective <strong>of</strong> the program is to strengthen the<br />
capacity <strong>of</strong> low-cost private schools to improve the quality <strong>of</strong><br />
the education delivered to poor communities.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Cluster-based Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Teachers program provides<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional development for private school teachers with<br />
a focus on primary education. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programs focus on<br />
develop<strong>in</strong>g teachers’ knowledge <strong>of</strong> content rather than on<br />
pedagogical approaches. <strong>The</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g is provided to clusters <strong>of</strong><br />
approximately 7 to10 schools <strong>and</strong> 30 to 35 teachers. Teachers<br />
are paid an allowance to attend the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g that covers<br />
transportation <strong>and</strong> other costs. Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g can be contracted out to<br />
the Punjab <strong>Education</strong> Foundation or to another private provider.<br />
<strong>The</strong> S<strong>in</strong>dh <strong>Education</strong> Foundation developed a quality<br />
assurance certification program to categorize schools<br />
<strong>in</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> their quality as a means <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>form<strong>in</strong>g parents’<br />
school<strong>in</strong>g decisions. <strong>The</strong> program also provides tailored quality<br />
enhancement support for public, private, <strong>and</strong> community/NGO<br />
schools, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> teachers <strong>and</strong> school staff.<br />
Under the No Child Left Beh<strong>in</strong>d Act, private providers can<br />
be contracted to provide additional academic <strong>in</strong>struction<br />
<strong>in</strong> schools that have not made adequate yearly progress<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g student achievement for three years. State<br />
education agencies identify organizations, whether public or<br />
private, that qualify to provide these services.<br />
