NATIONAL<br />
● Implement<strong>in</strong>g a strategy for reduc<strong>in</strong>g HIV/AIDS and <strong>drug</strong> <strong>abuse</strong> <strong>in</strong> prisons<br />
requires the follow<strong>in</strong>g:<br />
● Information on HIV/AIDS/STI/Drug <strong>abuse</strong> <strong>prevention</strong><br />
● Familiarisation of decision makers <strong>in</strong>volved at various levels <strong>in</strong> the runn<strong>in</strong>g of prisons<br />
with <strong>drug</strong> <strong>abuse</strong> and HIV/AIDS <strong>prevention</strong> issues<br />
● Availability of a group of dedicated m<strong>in</strong>istry and prisons officials who are aware of<br />
the problem and committed to improv<strong>in</strong>g the situation<br />
● Creation of clear action plans co-ord<strong>in</strong>ated with prison departments<br />
● Implementers felt that it is essential to expand the project to ensure the susta<strong>in</strong>ability<br />
of <strong>prevention</strong> work <strong>in</strong> prisons and to share experiences with other prisons through<br />
the dissem<strong>in</strong>ation of <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />
● Collaboration between the UN, civic organisations and youth organisations has<br />
resulted <strong>in</strong> a strong partnership <strong>in</strong> HIV/AIDS and <strong>drug</strong> <strong>abuse</strong> <strong>prevention</strong> work:<br />
Collaborat<strong>in</strong>g with and <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g youth effectively <strong>in</strong>creases awareness at the national<br />
and regional level. The support provided by the Government, youth organisations, and<br />
by the general public has made this <strong>in</strong>itiative very successful, and has emphasised that<br />
the support of the wider community is crucial to achiev<strong>in</strong>g behavioural change among<br />
young people.<br />
