This course covers the equipment and procedures related to<br />

DAT 112 Integrated Human Sciences (3-3-4)<br />

This course provides a basic study of human anatomy, physiology,<br />

and microbiology as related to dental science and the practice<br />

of dental assisting.<br />

DAT 113 Dental Materials (3-3-4)<br />

This course is a study of physical and chemical properties of<br />

matter and identification, characteristics, and manipulation of<br />

dental materials.<br />

DAT 115 Ethics and Professionalism (1-0-1)<br />

This course introduces a cursory history of dental assisting,<br />

professional associations, scope of service in dentistry, and ethical,<br />

legal and professional considerations. The state dental practice<br />

act is reviewed.<br />

DAT 118 Dental Morphology (1-3-2)<br />

This course emphasizes the development, eruption, and individual<br />

characteristics of each tooth and surrounding structures.<br />

DAT 121 Dental Health Education (1-3-2)<br />

This course defines the responsibilities of the dental assistant<br />

in individual and community dental health education with<br />

emphasis on the etiology of dental disease, methods for prevention,<br />

and principles of nutrition in relationship to oral health<br />

and preventive dentistry.<br />

DAT 122 Dental Office Management (1-3-2)<br />

This course provides a study of the business aspect of a dental<br />

office.<br />

DAT 123 Oral Medicine/Oral Biology (2-3-3)<br />

This course presents a basic study of oral pathology, pharmacology,<br />

nutrition, and common emergencies as related to the<br />

role of the dental assistant.<br />

DAT 127 Dental Radiography (3-3-4)<br />

This course provides the fundamental background and theory<br />

for the safe and effective use of x-radiation in dentistry. It<br />

encompasses the history of x-rays, production and uses of radiation,<br />

radiographic film, exposure factors, interpretation of<br />

radiographs, and radiation hygiene.<br />

DAT 154 Clinical Procedures I (2-6-4)<br />

This course includes preparation to assist a dentist efficiently<br />

in four-handed dentistry. Emphasis is on the names and functions<br />

of all dental instruments, the principles involved in their<br />

use, and the assistants’ role in dental instrumentation.<br />

DAT 177 Dental Office Experience (2-15-7)<br />

This course consists of practice in the dental office or clinic<br />

with rotation of assignments to encompass experiences in office<br />

management and clinical experience in all areas of dentistry.<br />

ECD 101 Introduction to Early Childhood (3-0-3)<br />

This course is an overview of growth and development, developmentally<br />

appropriate curriculum, positive guidance techniques,<br />

regulations, health, safety, and nutrition standards in<br />

early care and education. Professionalism, family/cultural values<br />

and practical applications based on historical and theoretical<br />

models in early care and education are highlighted in this<br />

course.<br />

ECD 102 Growth and Development I (2-3-3)<br />

This course is an extensive study of philosophies and theories<br />

of growth and development of infants/toddlers. Focus is on<br />

“total” development of the child, with emphasis on physical,<br />

social, emotional, cognitive, and nutritional areas. Developmental<br />

tasks and appropriate activities are explored in the course.<br />

ECD 105 Guidance-Classroom Management (3-0-3)<br />

This course is an overview of developmentally appropriate,<br />

effective guidance and classroom management techniques for<br />

the teacher of young children. A positive pro-active approach<br />

is stressed in the course.<br />

ECD 106 Observation of Young Children (2-3-3)<br />

In this course, a variety of observation skills and techniques<br />

for the purposes of achieving program goals and objectives,<br />

providing for individual needs, guiding children, and designing<br />

environments are covered. Focus is on the practical and<br />

appropriate use of these skills and techniques.<br />

ECD 107 Exceptional Children (3-0-3)<br />

This course includes an overview of special needs children and<br />

their families. Emphasis is on prevalence of disorders, treatment<br />

modalities, community resources serving exceptional children,<br />

the teacher’s role in mainstreaming and early identification, and<br />

on federal legislation affecting exceptional children.<br />

ECD 108 Family and Community Relations (3-0-3)<br />

This course is an overview of techniques and materials for promoting<br />

effective family/program partnerships to foster positive<br />

child development. Emphasis is on availability and<br />

accessibility of community resources and on developing<br />

appropriate communication skills.<br />

ECD 109 Administration and Supervision (3-0-3)<br />

This course is a study of the role and responsibilities of an<br />

early childhood administrator. Special focus is on program<br />

monetary matters, space management, curriculum, health and<br />

food services, and relations among the public, staff, and parents.<br />

ECD 131 Language Arts (3-0-3)<br />

This course is a study of methods and materials in ageappropriate<br />

language experiences. Opportunities are provided<br />

to develop listening, speaking, pre-reading and prewriting skills<br />

through planning, implementation, and evaluation of media,<br />
