Teaching of Art majors must meet all certification standards of the South Carolina State Department<br />

of Education for graduation. (See Department of Education)<br />

Student Learning Outcomes<br />

The Visual Arts area aims to foster the development of instruction of the highest quality while simultaneously<br />

encouraging varied and experimental approaches to the teaching of art and design to insure<br />

that students within the Visual Arts Programs will:<br />

• interpret the nonverbal language of art and design;<br />

• develop essential foundation-level art/design skills;<br />

• become familiar with and develop competence in a number of two-dimensional and three<br />

dimensional art/design disciplines;<br />

• become familiar with major achievements in the history of art, including the works and<br />

intentions of leading artists of the past and present;<br />

• develop critical thinking skills and cultivate the ability to make intelligent and informed<br />

judgments regarding excellence in the arts;<br />

• understand and evaluate contemporary thinking about art and design;<br />

• develop aesthetic perception by increasing their awareness of the aesthetic qualities in<br />

man-made and natural environments;<br />

• develop the capacity to identify and solve problems within a variety of physical, technological,<br />

social and cultural contexts;<br />

• develop technical skills to communicate effectively and to meet job demands;<br />

• make art as a personal creative statement;<br />

In addition, students within the Teaching of Art Program will:<br />

• demonstrate an understanding of theories, philosophies, research in and practices of teaching<br />

art to both children and adolescents;<br />

• plan and execute instruction that includes aesthetic perception, cultural heritage, creative<br />

expression, and criticism;<br />

Program objectives are in compliance with the South Carolina Visual Art Frameworks standards of the<br />

South Carolina Department of Education.<br />

ART 131 Fundamentals of Art I<br />

credit 3 hrs.<br />

This freshman-oriented studio course is designed to introduce students to the primary concepts, techniques,<br />

vocabulary, and tools for the creation of two-dimensional art forms. Basic tool and material<br />

safety concerns are discussed and career opportunities are explored. Instruction will be given through<br />

lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on studio projects.<br />

ART 132 Fundamentals of Art II<br />

credit 3 hrs.<br />

This freshman-oriented studio course is designed to introduce students to the primary concepts, techniques,<br />

safety concerns are discussed and career opportunities are explored. Instruction will be given through<br />

ART 133 Introduction to Digital Design<br />

credit 3 hrs.<br />

Introduction to the Macintosh computer as a tool for image making. Reinforcement of design elements<br />

and principles via the computer.
