ED 339 Teaching Targeted Populations<br />

credit 3 hrs.<br />

This course will provide prospective teachers with theoretical and practical understandings of the various<br />

targeted populations in public education today. The emphasis of this course may vary according<br />

to the identified population (African-American males, children from single parent homes, etc.)<br />

ED 343 Language Literacy/Practicum<br />

credit 4 hrs.<br />

This course provides instruction in language arts with an emphasis on reading methods. Students<br />

will explore language development and integrated language arts. Students will have experiences in<br />

developing instructional objectives, constructing and executing lesson plans, and designing literacy<br />

projects and activities. Twenty (20) hours of practicum experience is required. Prerequisite:<br />

Admission to Teacher Education Program.<br />

ED 420 Classroom Organization and Mangement/Practicum<br />

credit 2 hrs.<br />

This course will examine techniques of organizing and managing classroom activities. Various discipline<br />

models, techniques, methods, and constructs will be presented. A ten (10) hour practicum is<br />

required. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education Program.<br />

ED 424 Children’s Literature<br />

credit 2 hrs.<br />

This course surveys children’s literature with an emphasis on what is developmentally appropriate in<br />

the evaluation and selection of children’s books. Instructional methods for use of children’s literature<br />

as an integral pert of the classrooom are also addressed. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher<br />

Education.<br />

ED 430 Integrating the Arts into the Classroom/Practicum<br />

credit 3 hrs.<br />

Emphasis is placed on integrating music, art, movement, and drama with other subjects in the elementary<br />

classroom. Students will discover and develop skills in creative interactive activities that will<br />

capture children’s attention and motivate them to participate in the arts. This course includes a ten (10)<br />

hour Practicum.<br />

ED 450 Special Topics in Education<br />

credit 3 hrs.<br />

The study of selected topics in education designed specifically for early childhood education, elementary<br />

education, and secondary education majors. Prerequisite: Junior or senior standing, or consent of<br />

instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of six hours.<br />

ED 460 Student Teaching<br />

credit 12 hrs.<br />

This course emphasizes experiences in planning and implementing effective classroom procedures.<br />

Special emphasis is given to individualized learning processes and the use of modern instructional<br />

media. Twelve (12) weeks of full-time experience under the supervision of cooperating teachers and<br />

college supervisors are required. Prerequisite: Admission to Student Teaching.<br />

CHILD DEVELOPMENT COURSES<br />

CD 232 Developing Activities for Young Children<br />

credit 3 hrs.<br />

Focus on planning, developing, an implementing culturally and developmentally appropriate activities<br />

for children from birth to five years. Emphasis on all areas of development (social, cultural, emotional,<br />

cognitive, language, and physical). Use of technology is also emphasized.<br />

CD 334 Preschool Curriculum Models<br />

credit 3 hrs.<br />

An overview of Early Childhood Curriculum models (e.g., Reggio Emilio, Montessori, Head Start,<br />

Bank Street). Twenty (20) hours of practicum experiences are required.<br />

Prerequisite: CD 232.<br />

CD 336 School Age Children’s Development and Programming<br />

credit 3 hrs.<br />

Typical and atypical development for 6- to 12-year old in families, schools, and society. Discussion<br />

of parenting issues, culture, and after school programming. NAEYC guidelines for working with<br />

school age children. Twenty (20) hours of practicum experience are required.<br />

CD 338 Infant and Toddler Development and Activities<br />

credit 3 hrs.
