OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS<br />

Office of International Programs (OIP)<br />

Established in 2000, the OIP functions under the Office of Academic Affairs.<br />

The Mission of the OIP is:<br />

• To expose students, faculty, and staff to the international dimensions of the world<br />

• To assist the <strong>College</strong> in achieving its teaching, research, and service mission of geographic,<br />

international, and ethnic diversity in its student body.<br />

• To prepare students for both full and active participation as socially conscious members of<br />

society.<br />

• To continue to struggle to move the U.S. closer to the objective of universal justice through<br />

equity for all.<br />

Components of OIP include:<br />

I. STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM FOR BENEDICT STUDENTS 1<br />

1. Study Abroad General Requirements:<br />

• Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better<br />

• Have a minimum of one semester, 16 full-time credit hours, of study at <strong>Benedict</strong><br />

• Be a full-time student in the semester of travel abroad.<br />

• Have a valid passport with a least six months beyond the beginning of travel date.<br />

• Be in good academic, disciplinary, and judicial standing<br />

• Complete all visa processes and requirements<br />

• Complete all OIP required orientation sessions<br />

• Be able to pay own airfare, personal-care expenses, international medical insurance, and<br />

visa fees.<br />

• Agree to make at least two presentations to the <strong>Benedict</strong> community about their study<br />

abroad experience upon return.<br />

• Students must take 3 credit hours in the language of the host country, which can be used<br />

to fulfill the <strong>College</strong>’s General Education language requirement.<br />

• Agree to abide by the rules and regulations of the international host institution.<br />

• Students under 18 must have their parent/legal guardian’s permission to study abroad.<br />

• Fill out the OIP Study Abroad Application (SAA) form (online at www.bcoip.net)<br />

2. Study Abroad Application and Deadlines.<br />

All students interested in the <strong>Benedict</strong> <strong>College</strong> Study Abroad Program must fill out an OIP<br />

SAA.The form can be found online at www.bcoip.net or at the OIP office 2318 Haskell Ave.<br />

There are no fees associated with the application. Students must specify the semester they<br />

wish to travel and country(ies) of interest. The application deadlines are March 15 for the fall<br />

semester, and September 15 for the spring semester and summer programs.<br />

3. Countries with OIP Study Abroad Programs<br />

The OIP at <strong>Benedict</strong> <strong>College</strong> has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) for exchange<br />

of faculty, students, and administrators with the following universities abroad: Universidad<br />

Tecnológica del Chocó, in Quibdó, Chocó, Colombia; the University of Ghana, in Accra,<br />

Ghana, Yibin University in Yibin, China, and the University of Zululand in Kwa-Zulu Natal,<br />

South Africa. Yalova University,Turkey (pending). MOUs are now in development in Russia<br />

and India.<br />

3a. Study Abroad at the Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó (UTCH)<br />

Students can sign up for a full summer term or short term total immersion Spanish Abroad<br />

at the Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó, under the guidance of well qualified,<br />

professional faculty, an overall outstanding faculty and student body, and a friendly atmosphere.<br />

3b. Study abroad at the University of Ghana (UG)<br />

Students can sign up for a semester of study at the University of Ghana, Legon. Founded<br />

Study Abroad requirements for international students enrolled at <strong>Benedict</strong> <strong>College</strong> are the same as for US students,<br />

except for Visa requirements. For country-specific Visa requirements please contact OIP directly., or visit<br />

www.state.travel.org
