Office of International Programs (OIP)
Established in 2000, the OIP functions under the Office of Academic Affairs.
The Mission of the OIP is:
• To expose students, faculty, and staff to the international dimensions of the world
• To assist the College in achieving its teaching, research, and service mission of geographic,
international, and ethnic diversity in its student body.
• To prepare students for both full and active participation as socially conscious members of
society.
• To continue to struggle to move the U.S. closer to the objective of universal justice through
equity for all.
Components of OIP include:
I. STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM FOR BENEDICT STUDENTS 1
1. Study Abroad General Requirements:
• Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better
• Have a minimum of one semester, 16 full-time credit hours, of study at Benedict
• Be a full-time student in the semester of travel abroad.
• Have a valid passport with a least six months beyond the beginning of travel date.
• Be in good academic, disciplinary, and judicial standing
• Complete all visa processes and requirements
• Complete all OIP required orientation sessions
• Be able to pay own airfare, personal-care expenses, international medical insurance, and
visa fees.
• Agree to make at least two presentations to the Benedict community about their study
abroad experience upon return.
• Students must take 3 credit hours in the language of the host country, which can be used
to fulfill the College’s General Education language requirement.
• Agree to abide by the rules and regulations of the international host institution.
• Students under 18 must have their parent/legal guardian’s permission to study abroad.
• Fill out the OIP Study Abroad Application (SAA) form (online at www.bcoip.net)
2. Study Abroad Application and Deadlines.
All students interested in the Benedict College Study Abroad Program must fill out an OIP
SAA.The form can be found online at www.bcoip.net or at the OIP office 2318 Haskell Ave.
There are no fees associated with the application. Students must specify the semester they
wish to travel and country(ies) of interest. The application deadlines are March 15 for the fall
semester, and September 15 for the spring semester and summer programs.
3. Countries with OIP Study Abroad Programs
The OIP at Benedict College has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) for exchange
of faculty, students, and administrators with the following universities abroad: Universidad
Tecnológica del Chocó, in Quibdó, Chocó, Colombia; the University of Ghana, in Accra,
Ghana, Yibin University in Yibin, China, and the University of Zululand in Kwa-Zulu Natal,
South Africa. Yalova University,Turkey (pending). MOUs are now in development in Russia
and India.
3a. Study Abroad at the Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó (UTCH)
Students can sign up for a full summer term or short term total immersion Spanish Abroad
at the Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó, under the guidance of well qualified,
professional faculty, an overall outstanding faculty and student body, and a friendly atmosphere.
3b. Study abroad at the University of Ghana (UG)
Students can sign up for a semester of study at the University of Ghana, Legon. Founded
