2012-13 <strong>flyers</strong> Broadcasters<br />

Jim Jackson Play-By-Play Announcer<br />

Jim Jackson is in his 19th season broadcasting with the <strong>Flyers</strong> and his 17th on television. He is a six-time<br />

Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award winner for Sports Play-By-Play/Color Commentary and twice a winner for<br />

Best Live Sports Coverage Series. He was selected as the 2011 Pennsylvania Broadcaster of the Year by<br />

the National Sportscasters & Sportswriters Association. For the past six years, Jackson has also been<br />

a member of the broadcast team on the <strong>Philadelphia</strong> Phillies radio network.<br />

Jackson joined the <strong>Flyers</strong> in 1993 as the team’s radio play-by-play voice and served in that role for two<br />

seasons (1993-94 & 1994-95) before moving over to the TV side. He came to the <strong>Flyers</strong> after spending<br />

the previous six years doing play-by-play for the Utica Devils, formerly the New Jersey Devils’ American<br />

Hockey League affiliate. He also served as sports director for WTLB (AM) Radio in Utica, New York, and<br />

was the play-by-play broadcaster for the Utica Blue Sox (New York Penn League, Class “A” Baseball).<br />

Jackson graduated from Syracuse University in 1985 with a degree in Broadcast Journalism, where he<br />

handled the play-by-play duties for the university’s football, basketball, and lacrosse teams. He is a native of Utica and currently<br />

resides in Gloucester Township, New Jersey, with his wife, Bernadette, and their two children, daughter Deanna and son Johnny.<br />

Steve Coates Rinkside Analyst<br />

Steve Coates is entering his 30th season as a member of the <strong>Flyers</strong> broadcast team. He currently serves as<br />

a rinkside analyst for <strong>Flyers</strong> telecasts and as a studio analyst on <strong>Flyers</strong> Postgame Live.<br />

A former right wing who appeared in five games with the Detroit Red Wings during the 1976-77 season,<br />

Coates has filled several roles with the <strong>Flyers</strong> since retiring as a player in 1980. His work has ranged from<br />

radio color commentary to studio host on <strong>Flyers</strong> telecasts on both WTAF-TV (Channel 29, 1984 through<br />

1986) and WGBS-TV (Channel 57, 1987 through 1991). He served as the radio color analyst on WIP-AM for<br />

six seasons before being named to his current position, which he has held for the past 12 years. Coates<br />

has won a Mid-Atlantic Emmy (2000 & 2004) for Best Live Sports Coverage Series and has also served as<br />

the television color commentator for <strong>Philadelphia</strong> Phantoms and <strong>Flyers</strong> Cup telecasts during his career.<br />

Coates played professional hockey for eight different clubs from 1973 through 1980, including his time with<br />

the Red Wings in 1976-77. He has also played for the Des Moines Capitals (IHL, 1973-74); Richmond Robins<br />

(AHL, 1974-76); Springfield Indians (AHL, 1976-77); Kansas City Red<br />

Wings (CHL, 1977-78); Maine Mariners (AHL, 1978); and the <strong>Philadelphia</strong>/Syracuse Firebirds (AHL, 1978-80). He is a 1973 graduate of<br />

Michigan Tech University with a degree in Business Administration.<br />

Steve and his wife, Lynn, reside in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey. He has a stepdaughter, Kerrie Lynne and two grandchildren,<br />

Lucas and Raegan.<br />

Keith Jones Color Analyst<br />

Keith Jones starts his seventh season as an in-booth color analyst for <strong>Flyers</strong> telecasts. He is also a national<br />

studio analyst for NBC’s NHL coverage, and served in that role on a national stage during the 2011 and<br />

2012 Stanley Cup Finals. In addition to his work on Comcast SportsNet and NBC, Jones also is a member<br />

of SportsRadio 94 WIP’s Morning Show. Prior to joining the <strong>Flyers</strong>’ game broadcast team, Jones served<br />

as an analyst Comcast SportsNet’s Post Game Live and Facing Off segments for the previous six seasons.<br />

Jones retired from professional hockey after a nine-year NHL career on November 21, 2000 due to a knee<br />

injury. He recorded 117 goals and 141 assists for 258 points and 765 penalty minutes in 491 career regular<br />

season games with the Washington Capitals (1992-93 to 1996-97), Colorado Avalanche (1996-97 to 1998-99)<br />

and the <strong>Flyers</strong> (1998-99 through 2000-01). He was acquired by the <strong>Flyers</strong> from Colorado in exchange for<br />

Shjon Podein on November 12, 1998. He registered 27 goals and 47 assists for 74 points and 164 penalty<br />

minutes in 131 games as a Flyer.<br />

Jones was drafted by the Capitals in the seventh round (141st overall) of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft following a four-year career at<br />

Western Michigan University. He resides in Shamong, New Jersey with his wife, Laura, and their daughter, Adrian.<br />
