Rules <strong>for</strong> classifying statistical units<br />

129. Production: Production is an activity resulting in a product. It is used with reference to the<br />

whole range of economic activities. The term is not reserved <strong>for</strong> the agricultural, mining or<br />

manufacturing sectors. It is also used in relation to the service sector. More specific terms<br />

may be used to denote production: provision of services, processing, manufacturing, etc.,<br />

depending on the branch of activity. Production may be measured in various ways either in<br />

physical terms or by value.<br />

130. Trans<strong>for</strong>mation: Trans<strong>for</strong>mation is a process that modifies the nature, composition or<br />

<strong>for</strong>m of raw materials, semi-finished or finished products <strong>for</strong> the purpose of obtaining new<br />

products.<br />

131. Treatment: A process that is carried out, inter alia, <strong>for</strong> the purpose of protecting certain<br />

products, <strong>for</strong> giving them certain properties or <strong>for</strong> preventing any harmful effects that<br />

might otherwise result from their use. Examples are the treatment of crops, wood, metals<br />

and waste.<br />

132. Value added: The gross value added at basic price is defined as the difference between<br />

output at basic prices and intermediate consumption at purchasers’ prices.<br />
