and Israeli cartoons as more justified in <strong>the</strong> bogus pipeline condition (M =<br />

2.95, SD = .61) than in <strong>the</strong> camouflage condition (M = 2.59, SD = .71).<br />

These main effects were qualified by a significant three-way mortality<br />

salience, bogus pipeline, and target country interaction F (1,149) = 11.23, p<br />

= .001. Based on <strong>the</strong>se findings, <strong>the</strong> hypo<strong>the</strong>sis—that levels <strong>of</strong> justification<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> cartoons would be highest in <strong>the</strong> mortality salience/bogus pipeline/<br />

Israel group—was tested with a one-degree <strong>of</strong> freedom contrast in which<br />

<strong>the</strong> mortality salience/bogus pipeline/Israel cell was coded as 7, and all<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r cells were coded as –1. Cell means and contrast coefficients are<br />

presented in Table 3.<br />

The pattern <strong>of</strong> cell means (see Table 3) clearly supported <strong>the</strong> hypo<strong>the</strong>sis.<br />

Mean attitude toward Israel was 3.41 in <strong>the</strong> mortality salience/bogus<br />

pipeline cell, whereas it was near 2.79 in all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r cells. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore,<br />

<strong>the</strong> one-degree-<strong>of</strong>-freedom contrast was significant, t (141) = 4.17, p
