What is a rates rebate and what are the benefits?<br />
1. The rates rebate is a “discount” of 40% applied to the consumer’s domestic rates charges.<br />
2. The benefit will vary as it depends on the amount of rates charged.<br />
Who qualifies for a rates rebate?<br />
1. Various criteria have to be met in order to qualify for a rebate. The applicant must:<br />
a) Be over 60 years of age<br />
b) Receive combined (with spouse) income less than the limit determined by council from<br />
time to time.<br />
c) Occupy the property for which rebate is applied<br />
How do I apply for a rates rebate?<br />
1. Application forms are available from enquiries desks at municipal offices.<br />
2. Application forms together with ID, proof of income and proof of home ownership must be<br />
submitted to your nearest office.<br />
Can I apply for a rebate even if I receive an indigent subsidy?<br />
1. Yes, both schemes can if received simultaneously if you qualify.<br />
Will my account be reduced if I find a water leak on my property?<br />
1. The account will be recalculated if the following criteria are met:<br />
a) The leak must be repaired within 48 hours of detection.<br />
b) A letter from a registered plumber or a sworn affidavit must be submitted within 10 days<br />
of the repair of the leak.<br />
2. The excess charges will be recalculated in terms of the “Water Leak” tariff which is lower than<br />
the usual tariff.<br />
3. The water billing will be reduced but not cleared entirely as the wasted water was supplied at a<br />
cost to BCMM.<br />
