The Truth about Fannie
and Freddie
• Perception: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had
to be taken over by the government because of
their exposure to bad mortgages and huge
losses.
• Reality: Less than 2% of the mortgages held or
guaranteed by Fannie and Freddie are seriously
delinquent. While credit losses and expenses
have jumped dramatically at the GSEs, they
have set aside more than $12 billion to cover
future losses and are not in imminent danger.
