Tune Up Your
Property for Spring
Spring is the perfect time to check your property to identify repairs and
change routines in order to save money on your water bill. A hidden leak
can cost you hundreds of dollars and wastes water.
Make Repairs
Repair dripping faucets
by replacing washers.
Check toilets for a tank
leak, running water or
worn out parts.
Encourage tenants to
report running toilets
or dripping faucets.
Retrofit wasteful household
fixtures with those designed
to restrict flow. Save up to
50% in water usage.
Replace an old toilet that
uses 3-5 gallons per flush
with an ultra-low volume
(ULV) toilet which uses
1.6 gallons per flush.
Save 70% in water flushed.
Outfit your garden hose
with a shut-off nozzle
which can be adjusted
down to a fine spray.
If you need the water off in order to make a
repair, call BWSC at (617) 989-7000.
Change Your Routine
Do not let the faucet run
while brushing teeth, shaving,
cleaning vegetables, or doing
the dishes.
Soak dishes instead of rinsing.
Do not use running water to
thaw meat or other frozen foods.
Run only full loads of laundry and dishes.
Avoid flushing toilets unnecessarily. Dispose of trash
in the proper receptacle.
Use a broom, not the hose, to clean sidewalks
and driveways.
Water plants and grass early in the morning to
minimize evaporation.
