The City of Boston’s dog fouling ordinance (also called the Pooper Scooper Law) requires dog owners
to remove and properly dispose of any feces left by their dogs. This ordinance covers waste left by dogs on sidewalks, streets, parks,
and neighbors’ lawns. Violation of this regulation is punishable by a fine for each occurrence.
Dog owners can help prevent contamination of local waterways, parklands, and beaches from dog waste by picking up after their dogs.
After picking up dog waste, it should be placed in a trash receptacle or a place specifically for dog waste. Never throw dog waste into
the grates in the street—these are catch basins.
During rainy weather, dog waste that is not scooped up is carried in stormwater runoff to catch basins.
Catch basins connect to Boston’s storm drain system that discharges to Boston Harbor or the
Charles, Muddy, Mystic or Neponset Rivers. Dog waste can pollute beaches, fisheries, and parklands
in addition to being
unpleasant and unhealthy for swimmers, sunbathers, and fish life.
