A <strong>Guide</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Primary</strong> <strong>Care</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>People</strong> <strong>with</strong> <strong>HIV</strong>/<strong>AIDS</strong><br />
Chapter 3: Core Elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>HIV</strong> <strong>Primary</strong> <strong>Care</strong><br />
KEY POINTS<br />
The focus <strong>of</strong> the first visit is determined<br />
by the patient’s most immediate needs.<br />
The initial evaluation is complex and<br />
usually requires several visits.<br />
An important aspect <strong>of</strong> primary care<br />
is answering the patient’s questions <strong>to</strong><br />
ensure that he or she understands the<br />
<strong>HIV</strong> disease process and treatment.<br />
While patients <strong>with</strong> early-stage <strong>HIV</strong><br />
disease can be seen at 3-month intervals<br />
for routine medical evaluation, those<br />
receiving ART or <strong>with</strong> more advanced<br />
disease must be seen more frequently.<br />
A multidisciplinary team approach <strong>with</strong><br />
the patient as primary caregiver is the<br />
best approach <strong>to</strong> care.<br />
