. . . Sam 1 i ' CHICAGO The entire Aveo Embassy staff has been covering the Midwest in a conceited sales campaign. Milt Levins, Central division manager, has been contacting exhibitors in Cincinnati and surrounding territory: David Siekich has been traveling the Michigan territory, and Paul Sil. branch manager, has been making the rounds in Illinois. The two films highlighted were "The Domino Principle" and "Cross of Iron." Understandably, United Artists people here are involved in post-Academy Award activity in behalf of "Network" and "Rocky." Theatres which have been playing "Rocky" are noting increased business at the boxoffice . . . Peter Cravath. formerly of the Paramount Pictures staff, has joined United Artists as a booker. It was good news to learn that Olive Podorsky has made good progress following surgery and she will be back at her post at Kaplan-Continental Pictures in early April Kaplan has been readying "Kiss of the Tarantula" for a first opening in this area Friday (29). Bill Hutton has been appointed manager of the new Plitt Round Lake Commons theatres. The two Round Lake properties will be playing "Airport '77" and "Network" as starters. Jesse Chinnick, sales manager for Levitt- Pickman, advised Sid Kaplan of S-K Films that test engagements are being set up for "Sudden Death." Exhibitors who have had the first "in" on this thriller say it could be one of the great spring drive-in attractions. As soon as the full results of the special openings become available, marketing strategy for the Midwest will be announced. Chinnick also announced that the precise date for return engagements of "The Groove Tube" will be released shortly. Numerous exhibitors have indicated they want to rebook this always popular feature which has earned a cult status. Some exhibitors say they have probably rebooked "The Groove Tube" more often than any other independent picture released. Warner Bros.' "Brothers" is set for opening at the Chicago Theatre in the Loop Friday (22). Sixteen theatres and three drive-ins were first in presenting "All the President's Men" after the film won four Oscars. Bobbi (Roberta) Teitei's new book, "Fantasies Fulfilled," will be published soon. Her father Chuck Teitel hopes to snag the movie rights. In a review in the Daily News, Christine Nieland said "Mohammad, Messenger of God" appears to be "intentionally a commercial for Islam, a vehicle for publicizing its beliefs to Western audiences . . . This is the movie for which the Hanafi Muslims captured hostages in Washington, D.C., to demand its withdrawal from movie theatres. I'm not sure why they objected to it." Twentieth Century-Fox staffers have been doing double duty in finalizing plans for openings of "Mr. Billion," "Young Frankenstein," "Silver Streak" and "Raggedy Ann & Andy." "Mr. Billion," starring Jackie Gleason, Valerie Perrine, Terence Hill and Chill Wills, is set for a wide multiple beginning Friday (15). A total of 100 prints of "Young Frankenstein" represent a saturation return of this film Friday (29). This repeat engagement will be backed by a big TV campaign. "Silver Streak," which has been one of the big moneymakers during the past weeks, is set for a saturation sub-break starting in late April. Exploitation of "Raggedy Ann & Andy" has been moving along in high gear starting with contests offering admission tickets as prizes. An especially effective job of publicity was instigated by 20th-Fox Midwest publicist Larry Dieckhaus. A story relating the history of Raggedy Ann appeared in the "Tempo" section of the Tribune March 31, just ahead of the film's opening. The Tribune item noted that there has been a Raggedy Ann revival and it is expected the movie will stimulate further interest. "Wiz- beliefs. It is rated PG and not recommended for small children. According to reports, a fourth unit will be added to the M&R Norridge 1-2-3. Buena Vista district manager Virgil Jones and salesman Keith Vezensky were in Indianapolis to talk with exhibitors about "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh," as well as upcoming BV product. Included are "The Boatniks," "The Rescuers," a new animated feature, and "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo." INDIANAPOLIS n most interesting book has just been released. Entitled "Indianapolis Theatres from A to Z," it was published by Gladson Publications of this city. There were three years of research by Gene Gladson of this city before actual publication. The book traces the very beginning of the first theatre up to the present-day stage and motion pictheatres. The 170 pages in the book are filled with little-known facts, along with pictures and drawings of theatres. Between the covers of this attractive book are such subjects as "First Nude Film," "First Obscene Film Court Case." "First Sound-Sex Film," "First Wide Screen," "Sunday Openings" and many more interesting and almost forgotten subjects. In reading this book, one point seems to surface. That is that the problems that beset the industry in the early days of the motion picture exhibitors and distributors haven't changed very much. It seems we are confronted with basically the same difficulties, except that today's are perhaps more complex.
