RULE 4 / DEFINITIONS<br />
b. The pivot foot shall not be lifted before the ball is released to start a<br />
dribble.<br />
Art. 5. After coming to a stop when neither foot can be the pivot foot:<br />
a. One or both feet may be lifted, but may not be returned to the playing<br />
court, before the ball is released on a pass or try for goal;<br />
b. Neither foot shall be lifted, before the ball is released, to start a dribble.<br />
Art. 6. It is traveling when a player falls to the playing court while holding the<br />
ball without maintaining a pivot foot.<br />
Section 73. Try for Goal/Act of Shooting<br />
Art. 1. A try for field goal is an attempt by a player to score two or three points<br />
by throwing or tapping the ball into his or her basket.<br />
Art. 2. A three-point try shall occur when a try leaves the player’s hand when<br />
that player is outside the three-point line with at least one foot in contact with<br />
the playing floor behind the line and the other foot not contacting the line or the<br />
playing floor in front of that line.<br />
Art. 3. The try shall start when the player begins the motion that habitually<br />
precedes the release of the ball on a try. The ball does not need to leave the<br />
player’s hand. The arm might be held so that the player cannot throw; however,<br />
he or she may be making an attempt.<br />
Art. 4. A try shall end when the throw is successful, when it is certain the throw<br />
is unsuccessful, when the thrown ball touches the floor or when the ball becomes<br />
dead.<br />
Art. 5. A dunk attempt is a try.<br />
Art. 6. The act of shooting shall begin simultaneously with the start of the try and<br />
end when the ball is clearly in flight, including when the shooter is an airborne<br />
shooter.<br />
Art. 7. An airborne shooter, who is fouled by an opponent, while in the air but<br />
after the ball is released shall be considered to be in the act of shooting until that<br />
airborne player returns to the floor.<br />
Section 74. Uniform<br />
A uniform shall consist of the game pants and game jersey. Game pants are the<br />
bottom portion of the uniform. Game jerseys are the top part of the uniform.<br />
Section 75. Unsportsmanlike Conduct<br />
Unsportsmanlike conduct is behavior or an act that is unbecoming to a fair, ethical<br />
and honorable individual.<br />
Section 76. Verticality<br />
Art. 1. Verticality applies to a legal position. The basic components of the<br />
principle of verticality are:<br />
a. Legal guarding position must be established and attained initially, and<br />
movement thereafter must be legal.<br />
b. From such position, the defender may rise or jump vertically and occupy<br />
the space within his or her vertical plane.<br />
c. The hands and arms of the defender may be raised within his or her<br />
vertical plane while the defender is on the playing court or in the air.
