RULE 7<br />
Out of Bounds and<br />
the Throw-in<br />
Section 1. Out of Bounds—Player, Ball<br />
Art. 1. A player shall be out of bounds when he or she touches the floor or any<br />
object other than a person on or outside a boundary line. An airborne player’s<br />
status shall be where he or she was last in contact with the floor.<br />
Art. 2. The ball shall be out of bounds when it touches a player who is out of<br />
bounds; any other person, the floor or any object on or outside a boundary; the<br />
supports or back of the backboard; or the ceiling, overhead equipment or supports.<br />
Art. 3. The ball shall be out of bounds when any part of the ball passes over the<br />
backboard from any direction.<br />
Section 2. Ball Caused To Go Out of Bounds<br />
Art. 1. The ball shall be caused to go out of bounds by the last player to touch or<br />
to be touched by the ball before the ball goes out, provided that the ball is out of<br />
bounds because of touching something other than a player who is out of bounds.<br />
Art. 2. When the ball is out of bounds because of touching or being touched by<br />
a player who is on or outside a boundary, such player shall have caused the ball<br />
to go out of bounds.<br />
Section 3. Ball Touched Simultaneously/Officials’ Doubt<br />
Art. 1. Play shall be resumed by use of the alternating-possession arrow when the<br />
ball goes out of bounds and:<br />
a. Was last touched simultaneously by two opponents, both of whom are<br />
inbounds or out of bounds.<br />
b. When the officials are in doubt as to who last touched the ball.<br />
Section 4. Ball Awarded Out of Bounds<br />
Art. 1. The ball shall be awarded out of bounds after:<br />
a. A violation as in Rule 9 or a simultaneous violation.<br />
b. The last free throw of a penalty for a technical foul. (Exception: Rule<br />
8-4.3)<br />
c. A field goal or a successful free throw for a personal foul as in Rule<br />
8-4.1.a or an awarded goal as in Rule 9-16.<br />
d. The ball becomes dead while a team is in control provided that no<br />
infraction or the end of a period is involved.<br />
e. A player-control foul.<br />
f. A team-control foul.<br />
g. A common foul before the bonus rule goes into effect.<br />
