RULE 9 / VIOLATIONS <strong>AND</strong> PENALTIES<br />
Art. 3. No teammate of the free-thrower may occupy either of the legal lane<br />
spaces nearest the basket.<br />
Section 2. Free-Throw Violation Penalties<br />
Art. 1. When a violation is by the free-thrower only or the free-thrower’s<br />
teammate only, no point shall be scored by that free throw. The ball shall become<br />
dead when the violation occurs. The ball shall be awarded at a designated spot<br />
nearest to where the violation occurred, unless another free throw is to be<br />
awarded.<br />
a. When disconcertion by an opponent is followed by a violation by the free<br />
thrower, a substitute free throw shall be awarded.<br />
Art. 2. When a violation is by the free-thrower’s opponent only:<br />
a. When the try is successful, the goal shall count, and the violation shall be<br />
disregarded.<br />
b. When the try is not successful, the ball shall become dead when the free<br />
throw ends, and a substitute free throw shall be attempted by the same freethrower<br />
under the same conditions as those for the original free throw.<br />
Art. 3. When there is a marked-lane space violation by a free-thrower’s teammate<br />
and an opponent:<br />
a. When the first violation is by the free-thrower’s teammate, the ball shall<br />
become dead when the violation occurs, no point shall be awarded for that<br />
free throw. When no other free throw is to follow, play shall be resumed<br />
by awarding the ball to the opponent of the team that committed the first<br />
violation at a designated spot nearest to where the violation occurred.<br />
b. When the first violation is by the opponent of the free-thrower’s team<br />
and the try is successful, the goal shall count, and the violation shall be<br />
disregarded. When the try is not successful, the ball shall become dead<br />
when the free throw ends, and a substitute free throw shall be attempted by<br />
the same free-thrower under the same conditions as those for the original<br />
free throw.<br />
Art. 4. When there is a violation, first by the free-thrower’s opponent followed<br />
by a violation of the free-thrower or a free-thrower’s teammate, each team has<br />
violated. A double violation has been committed. No points shall be awarded.<br />
When no other free throw is to follow, play shall be resumed by awarding the<br />
ball to the team entitled to an alternating-possession throw-in at a designated spot<br />
nearest to where the violations occurred.<br />
a. When both offenders are in marked lane spaces, the second violation is<br />
ignored as in Rule 9-2.3.b.<br />
b. When the second violation is by the free-thrower or a free-thrower’s<br />
teammate, who is behind the free-throw line extended and the three-point<br />
line, both violations are penalized.<br />
c. When an opponent’s fake causes the free-thrower or a teammate of the<br />
free-thrower to violate, only the fake shall be penalized.<br />
d. When disconcertion by an opponent is followed by a violation by the freethrower,<br />
a substitute free throw shall be awarded.<br />
Art. 5. When there is a simultaneous violation by each team, the ball shall become<br />
dead. No points shall be awarded. When no other free throw is to follow, play
