RULE 9 / VIOLATIONS <strong>AND</strong> PENALTIES87<br />
shall be resumed by awarding the ball to the team entitled to the alternatingpossession<br />
throw-in at a designated spot nearest to where the violations occurred,<br />
unless another free throw is to be awarded.<br />
Section 3. Ball Out of Bounds<br />
Art. 1. A player shall not cause the ball to go out of bounds.<br />
Art. 2. The ball shall be out of bounds when any part of the ball passes over the<br />
backboard from any direction.<br />
Section 4. Player Out of Bounds<br />
Art. 1. A player who steps out of bounds under his/her own volition and then<br />
becomes the first player to touch the ball after returning to the playing court has<br />
committed a violation.<br />
a. A violation has not been committed when a player, who steps out of<br />
bounds as permitted by Rule 7-5.6.b, does not receive the pass along the<br />
end line by a teammate and is the first to touch the ball after his or her<br />
return to the playing court.<br />
Art. 2. After the throw-in is completed, the thrower-in must touch the playing<br />
floor inbounds before touching the ball.<br />
Section 5. Throw-in Provisions<br />
Art. 1. The thrower-in shall not:<br />
a. Leave a designated spot.<br />
b. Fail to pass the ball directly into the playing court so that after it crosses<br />
the boundary line, it touches or is legally touched by an inbounds player<br />
or touched by a player, who is on the playing court, and causes the ball to<br />
be out of bounds.<br />
c. Execute a throw-in that lodges between the backboard and the ring or<br />
comes to rest on the flange.<br />
d. Consume more than five seconds from the time the throw-in starts until<br />
the ball is released.<br />
e. Carry or hand the ball to a teammate who is on the playing court.<br />
f. Touch the playing court or touch the ball in the playing court before it has<br />
touched another player.<br />
g. Throw the ball so that it enters the basket before touching anyone, strikes<br />
the back of the backboard or its supports, passes over the backboard, or<br />
bounces into the playing court from a balcony or from the floor out of<br />
bounds.<br />
Art. 2. No player other than the thrower-in shall:<br />
a. Perform the throw-in or be out of bounds after a designated-spot throw-in<br />
begins.<br />
b. Be out of bounds when he or she touches or is touched by the ball after<br />
it has crossed the vertical inside plane of the boundary line. Repeated<br />
infractions shall result in (men) a CLASS B technical foul and (women)<br />
a player/substitute technical foul.<br />
Art. 3. (Men) The opponents of the thrower-in shall not have any part of their<br />
person beyond the vertical inside plane of any boundary line before the ball
