RULE 5 / SCORING <strong>AND</strong> TIMING REGULATIONS<br />
b. When a held ball or violation occurs so near the expiration of time that the<br />
game clock is not stopped before time expires, the period shall end with<br />
the held ball or violation. (Exception: Rule 2-<strong>13</strong>.3.a.2).<br />
c. When a foul occurs so near the expiration of time that the official timer<br />
cannot stop the game clock before time expires or when the foul occurs<br />
after time expires but while the ball is in flight during a try, the period shall<br />
end when the free throw(s) and all related activity have been completed.<br />
(Exception: Rule 2-<strong>13</strong>.3.c)<br />
1. After the red light or LED lights have been activated to end a game,<br />
or after the game-clock horn sounds, when the red light or LED<br />
lights are not present in a game without a courtside monitor or the<br />
reading of zeros in a game with a courtside monitor, only those free<br />
throw(s) necessary to determine a winner or whether an extra period is<br />
necessary shall be awarded.<br />
Art. 4. In any period, when the game clock displays 10ths of seconds and play<br />
is to be resumed by a throw-in or a free throw when 3/10 (.3) of a second or less<br />
remains on the game clock, a player may not gain possession of the ball and try<br />
for a field goal. Such player can only score a field goal by means of a tap of the<br />
pass or of a missed free throw.<br />
Art. 5. Except for disqualification or ejection, no penalty or part of a penalty shall<br />
carry over from one half or extra period to another.<br />
Art. 6. No correction of a timing mistake shall be carried over from one half or<br />
extra period. Such a mistake shall be corrected before the start of the subsequent<br />
intermission.<br />
Art. 7. When a technical foul occurs after the ball has become dead to end a<br />
period that is to be followed by another period, the next period shall be started<br />
by administering the free throws. Play shall resume at the point of interruption<br />
for a technical foul. When the technical is a single flagrant 2 foul, a contact dead<br />
ball technical foul, or (women) an administrative technical foul for an excessive<br />
timeout, the ball is awarded to the offended team at the division line on either<br />
side of the playing court.<br />
a. When there is no way to determine whether there will be an extra period<br />
until the free throws for a technical foul are administered, the free throws<br />
shall be attempted immediately, as if the technical foul had been part of<br />
the preceding period.<br />
Section 8. Extra Period<br />
Art. 1. When the score is tied at the end of the second half, play shall continue<br />
without change of baskets for one or more extra period(s) with a one-minute<br />
intermission before each extra period. The game shall end when, at the end of any<br />
extra period, the score is not tied.<br />
Art. 2. The length of each extra period shall be five minutes. As many such<br />
periods as are necessary to break the tie shall be played.<br />
Art. 3. Each extra period is an extension of the second half.<br />
Section 9. Start Game Clock<br />
Art. 1. After time has been out, the game clock shall be started when the official<br />
