Glossary of Common Terms<br />
Accepted/Acceptance<br />
Applicant has met the entrance requirements<br />
for the program and will be admitted to the<br />
program at the next start date, or when the<br />
applicant is ready to start (if different from the<br />
“next start date”).<br />
Application & Application for Admission<br />
The process of applying for admission to a<br />
program. The application for Admission is used<br />
to collect basic information required to admit<br />
applicants to <strong>College</strong> programs. Additional<br />
information may be required in addition to<br />
this form in order to make decisions regarding<br />
acceptance.<br />
Asynchronous<br />
Learning by accessing course work when<br />
convenient to the learner (eg. ecourse,<br />
recordings, web)<br />
Brokering Arrangement<br />
An arrangement where an institution that owns<br />
or is responsible for a program [the credentialing<br />
or sponsoring institution] enters into an<br />
agreement with one or more other institutions<br />
[the hosting or brokering institution].<br />
Cancelled or Closed Application<br />
The application is closed either at the request of<br />
the applicant or by the <strong>College</strong>. The applicant<br />
will need to initiate a new application to again<br />
be considered for the program.<br />
Certificates<br />
Upon successful completion of the identified<br />
requirements for a program, a certificate from<br />
the <strong>College</strong> is issued.<br />
Co-Requisite Course<br />
This is a course that is required to be taken<br />
concurrently with another course.<br />
Community Education Committees (CECs)<br />
A CEC is a group of citizens nominated by the<br />
community to advise and assist the <strong>College</strong> in<br />
carrying out its mission in each community.<br />
Representatives of each CEC also sit on the<br />
Council of Community Education Committees<br />
which acts as an advisory body to the Board.<br />
Conditionally Accepted<br />
The applicant is accepted but must meet certain<br />
conditions (final mark, specific forms, etc.),<br />
usually by a specified date. If the condition is<br />
not met the acceptance is forfeited.<br />
Core & Optional Courses<br />
A core course is one that is required to complete<br />
a credit program. Optional courses may or may<br />
not be required for a credit program. A program<br />
may require that a specific number of optional<br />
credits are required for completion.<br />
Course or Program Completion<br />
The exit standards as specified for the program,<br />
course, or offering have been achieved by the<br />
student.<br />
Course<br />
An organized set of learning modules designed<br />
to provide a student with the information to<br />
achieve specified learning goals. A course may<br />
or may not be part of a program and may be<br />
part of many programs.<br />
Credit Program<br />
A credit program is one that has been approved<br />
by the Department of Advanced Education and<br />
Technology under the Government of Alberta.<br />
Distance Education<br />
Distance Education is an opportunity to take a<br />
course from within a community using a variety<br />
of technologies even though the teacher and<br />
classmates may be in other communities.<br />
Elluminate<br />
This is Internet-based technology that is used<br />
to provide group instruction to students in<br />
different locations. The instructor & students<br />
communicate orally and through text messages<br />
in real time, view slides on the computer screen,<br />
interact by using drawing tools, and surf the<br />
Internet together.<br />
Entrance Requirements<br />
Minimum conditions and performance required<br />
for normal admission to a program.<br />
Full-time/Part-time Status<br />
Students must be enrolled in at least 60% of a<br />
full course load as defined for the program in<br />
order to be considered full-time.<br />
Moodle<br />
A web based learning management software<br />
(LMS) used to create interactive websites where<br />
teachers and students can communicate and<br />
collaborate in educational ways.<br />
Not Accepted<br />
The applicant has not been accepted to the<br />
program because he or she did not meet the<br />
prerequisites for a program.<br />
Official Student File<br />
A file for each student at the <strong>College</strong> is kept in the<br />
Registrar’s Office and is considered the official<br />
student file. This file may be a paper file or<br />
electronic information and contains information<br />
pertinent to the student’s enrollment at the<br />
<strong>College</strong>.<br />
Performance Contract<br />
Performance Contracts for progress are<br />
designed to assist the students in identifying and<br />
correcting academic progress and attendance<br />
problems before they become serious enough to<br />
threaten their educational plan.<br />
Practicum<br />
The term “practicum” applies to a broad range<br />
of learning settings and experiences, ranging<br />
from a volunteer observation experience to<br />
direct involvement in the workplace (e.g.<br />
community agency, radio station, theatre)<br />
wherein the workplace is the classroom and<br />
students are under the direct supervision of staff<br />
of the organization or agency and/or instructors<br />
in the program.<br />
Program<br />
A planned learning experience designed to<br />
improve the knowledge and skills of participating<br />
students. Programs may be comprised of one or<br />
more courses.<br />
Offering<br />
The offering of a particular program or course<br />
during a particular year or term.<br />
Registration<br />
The process of confirming attendance in a<br />
program by reporting for class, completing<br />
startup paperwork (enrolment papers and other<br />
forms), paying fees, ordering books, obtaining<br />
<strong>College</strong> ID cards and verifying other information.<br />
A student who has completed registration<br />
activities is considered a registered student.<br />
Synchronous<br />
Learning by communicating and interacting<br />
in real time (eg. classroom, teleconference,<br />
videoconference).<br />
Transcript<br />
An official statement of the student’s entire<br />
academic record at the <strong>College</strong>, bearing the<br />
original signature of the Registrars Office and<br />
the official seal of the <strong>College</strong>.<br />
Tuition Fees<br />
Fees for instruction received from students, or<br />
paid on behalf of students. Other fees such as<br />
Students’ Association and Learning Resources<br />
fees may also be charged to students.<br />
Timetable<br />
A timetable is prepared to schedule all programs,<br />
courses and modules offered during a specific<br />
time period. This may be a timetable related to<br />
the program or college schedule or a timetable<br />
related to a specific student schedule.<br />
Waitlisted<br />
Students are waitlisted when the desired program<br />
offering is full (there are no seats available at this<br />
time). The students are considered as accepted<br />
and are offered a space in the program when one<br />
becomes available.<br />
Withdrawal<br />
A withdrawal occurs when a student leaves a<br />
module, course or program for any reason or<br />
when the first year of a two-year program is<br />
complete.<br />
