Nursing Foundations VI: Community Nursing<br />
This nursing course examines family and community theory to acquire<br />
the knowledge and skill required to promote the health and<br />
well-being of families within the community. The course emphasizes<br />
the importance of collaboration between the interdisciplinary<br />
healthcare team, families, and communities to achieve safe evidence<br />
informed community nursing practice. The learner will build upon<br />
previous nursing knowledge and related theory in adapting the nursing<br />
approach to the care and health promotion of the family and<br />
community using a nursing model and nursing process. Trends and<br />
issues in the care of families and communities will also be explored.<br />

NFDN2007 (3 credits)<br />
Nursing Foundations VII: Mental Health Nursing<br />
This nursing course explores legal and ethical considerations and<br />
social stigmas related to mental health disorders. The learner examines<br />
evidence informed mental health nursing practice for clients and<br />
their families as they adjust to changes in functioning associated with<br />
mental health issues and related treatments. The learner builds previous<br />
knowledge and related theory in adapting the nursing approach<br />
to the care and health promotion of mental health clients and their<br />
families using a nursing model and the nursing process. Trends and<br />
issues in mental health nursing will also be explored.<br />

NFDN2008 (3 credits)<br />
Nursing Foundations VIII: Transition to Graduate<br />
This nursing foundations course prepares the learner for the transition<br />
from a learner to graduate practical nurse. The course explores<br />
working within the parameters of a healthcare organization, labour<br />
relations, and the professional association. The learner will learn ways<br />
to empower and motivate, to build successful teams, types of management<br />
and leadership styles, professional development, continued<br />
competence, lifelong learning, and quality improvement, all of which<br />
contribute to becoming a professional practical nurse in today’s<br />
healthcare field.<br />

NPRT1000 (5 credits)<br />
Nursing Practice I: Continuing Care Practicum<br />
This first practice nursing course provides opportunities for the<br />
learner to gain experience as a member of the interdisciplinary<br />
healthcare team by providing safe, holistic and evidence informed<br />
nursing care within a continuing care setting following the standards<br />
of practice for a practical nurse.<br />
Pre-requisites: PSYC1060, PHRM1000, HEAS1000, NFDN1000,<br />
NFDN1002, PATH1000<br />
NPRT2002 (4 credits)<br />
Nursing Practice II: Acute Care Practicum<br />
This practice course provides the learner with clinical experience as<br />
a member of the healthcare team in providing safe, holistic and evidence<br />
informed nursing care to clients and families in an acute care<br />
medicine environment following the standards of practice for a practical<br />
nurse. This course involves four weeks of instructor-supervised<br />
clinical practice on an acute care medicine unit.<br />

NPRT2003 (4 credits)<br />
Nursing Practice III: Acute Care Practicum<br />
This practice course provides the learner with clinical experience as<br />
a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team by providing safe,<br />
holistic and evidence informed nursing care to clients in an acute care<br />
surgery environment following the standards of practice for a practical<br />
nurse.<br />
Pre-requisite: NPRT2002<br />
NPRT2004 (3 credits)<br />
Nursing Practice IV: Focused Practicum<br />
This course provides the opportunity for the learner to integrate program<br />
knowledge, skills, attitudes, and judgments into the role of the<br />
practical nurse in a specialized practice environment. The learner will<br />
apply accumulated knowledge and skills in a clinical experience involving<br />
three weeks of instructor-supervised or preceptored clinical<br />
practice in one of the following settings: community, rural, maternity,<br />
pediatric, or mental health.<br />

NPRT2005 (4 credits)<br />
Nursing Practice V: Comprehensive Practicum<br />
This final course of the program provides the opportunity for the<br />
learner to integrate knowledge, skills, attitudes, and judgments in<br />
transition to the role of the graduate practical nurse. The learner will<br />
apply learned competencies in a clinical experience in a four-week,<br />
preceptored clinical practice assuming the anticipated roles of a graduate<br />
practical nurse. The focus of this course is to provide placement<br />
opportunities for students to integrate medical/surgical generalist<br />
nursing skills and abilities.<br />
Pre-requisite: Practical Nurse Term 1, 2, 3 & 4 courses (or equivalent)<br />

Keyboarding I<br />
Students will develop keyboarding sills by completing skill building<br />
lessons, drills, and timings. Students must attain a minimum speed of<br />
30 net words per minute with no more than 3 errors on three-minute<br />
timings.<br />

Employment Documentation<br />
Students will explore office careers, conduct skill inventories, and create<br />
a portfolio. They will also gain experience by participating in a<br />
mock interview.<br />
