Northern Lakes College 2012–2013 Calendar Business Administration CERTIFICATE AND DIPLOMA • Full-time and Part-time Program Options 1. BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION - CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION (Year 1): Day & Evening Offerings 2. BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION - DIPLOMA (Year 2) - Offered in collaboration with Portage College: a. Human Resources (Pending Approval) b. Management Studies c. Accounting (Pending Approval) The Business Administration Certificate program is a one-year program that introduces students to general business concepts. Students wishing to further pursue their business training can continue into the Diploma program and choose one of the three second-year specializations (Human Resources, Management Studies or Accounting). BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION – Certificate (Year 1) Locations Day Offering: Most NLC Campuses Evening Offering: Available at any NLC campus Program Dates Day Offering: Term 1: September 4, 2012 to December 14, 2012 Term 2: January 7, 2013 to April 26, 2013 Term 3: May 6, 2013 to May 31, 2013 (Optional) Evening Offering (selected courses offered each term – by taking 2 courses per term, students may complete the program in 2 years): Offering 1: September 4, 2012 to December 14, 2012 Offering 2: January 7, 2013 to Aprll 26, 2013 Offering 3: May 6, 2013 to June 21, 2013 Evening courses are run on Tuesday or Thursday evening from 6 to 9 pm. Program Description The Business Administration Certificate program is a one-year program that develops the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in business. Graduates are prepared to enter the workforce or continue their education at the diploma level. Topics include: • accounting and bookkeeping skills; • marketing principles; • computer applications; • business plans & proposals; • human resources management theory; • interpersonal communication skills, and • micro-economics theory. Employment Opportunities Graduates of this program have gained successful employment with a variety of businesses, government and community organizations (e.g., financial disbursements clerk, accounts receivable clerk, cashier shift supervisor, payroll clerk, office administrator). Further Education & Training Options Graduates of the certificate program may continue their education by enrolling into the Diploma program offered at Northern Lakes College or into a diploma program offered by other Alberta post-secondary institutions or eCampus Alberta. Students may also work toward Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or Certified General Accountant (CGA). Entrance Requirements Academic Requirements: • Credit in English 30-1 or 60% in English 30-2 or equivalent, • Credit in Pure Math 30, Applied Math 30, Math 30-1, 30-2, or 60% in Math 30-3 or equivalent. Other Requirements: • Fluency in English Note: Applicants without the academic requirements will be considered if they: - satisfactorily complete a Skills Appraisal Assessment or - have completed a General Educational Development (GED) Diploma, or - have met the provisional student requirements (successful completion of 3 courses—if math admission requirement is not met, at least one of the courses must be accounting, economics or math. The other two courses may be any Business Administration course except for Introduction to Computers.
