High School Certificate Options<br />
HIGH SCHOOL CERTIfiCATE OPTIONS<br />
Alberta Education High School Diploma<br />
Students who earn a minimum of 100 credits and satisfy<br />
the current course and credit requirements as specified in<br />
the Guide to Education will receive an Alberta Education<br />
High School Diploma.<br />

Equivalency Diploma (2 Alternatives)<br />
Alternative 1 – Accumulated Credits:<br />
A person who is 18 years or older as of September 1 of the<br />
current school year, is deficient in the credits needed for an<br />
Alberta High School Diploma, and has been out of school<br />
for at least 10 consecutive months, is eligible to apply for<br />
a High School Equivalency Diploma. The candidate shall<br />
obtain 100 credits as follows:<br />
A minimum of 60 credits as follows:<br />
• English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2 or 30/33 .... 5 credits<br />
• At least one other 30-level course ...................... 5 credits<br />
• At least one high school math course ................. 5 credits<br />
• At least one high school science course .............. 3 credits<br />
• Additional high school courses ......................... 42 credits<br />
Additional credits which, when added to those above, total<br />
at least 100, as follows:<br />
• any combination of additional high school courses and<br />
approved adult education courses from recognized<br />
agencies<br />
• Credits for maturity ............................... up to 15 credits<br />
– Age 21-24 (inclusive) ....................................... 5 credits<br />
– Age 25-29 (inclusive)...................................... 10 credits<br />
– Age 30 and over ............................................. 15 credits<br />
• Extensive Travel ....................................... up to 5 credits<br />
• Extensive reading or private study ......... up to 5 credits<br />
To apply for the Alberta High School Equivalency Diploma<br />
using this alternative, a Statement of Courses and Marks and<br />
any additional documents such as apprenticeship papers or<br />
trade certification are to be submitted to a local high school<br />
principal. <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>College</strong> has designated staff for<br />
this purpose. The documentation is reviewed and forwarded<br />
to Alberta Education with an eligibility recommendation.<br />
Upon approval, the Equivalency Diploma is issued.<br />
Alternative 2 - General Educational<br />
Development (GED) Tests:<br />
Successful completion of the General Educational<br />
Development (GED) tests provide the student with an<br />
Alberta Education High School Equivalency Diploma.<br />
Recognized throughout Canada and the United States, the<br />
GED is designed for adults who did not receive a high school<br />
diploma and want to continue their education, training, or<br />
gain employment. Participants must be 18 years of age or<br />
older and out of school for at least 10 consecutive months.<br />
Program of Study for GED:<br />
• Language Arts, Reading<br />
• Language Arts, Writing<br />
• Social Studies<br />
• Science<br />
• Mathematics<br />
Registration for GED Testing:<br />
Registration forms and study materials/resources may be<br />
obtained at any <strong>NLC</strong> <strong>College</strong> campus.. The first time writing<br />
fee for the GED examination is $150.00. The rewrite fee is<br />
$80.00.<br />

Note: A revised GED examination will be coming out in 2015. All<br />
GED examinees are advised that scores earned on the current series<br />
or previous tests will not be able to be combined with those earned<br />
on the new 2015 Series GED tests. By December 31, 2014, examinees<br />
must have taken and earned minimum scores on all five content area<br />
tests and earned the minimum total passing standard on the previous<br />
series, or they will need to take the entire 2015 Series test battery.<br />
