Students choose a specialization from one of the following: • Human Resources (Pending Approval) • Management Studies • Accounting (Pending Approval) Locations Most NLC Campuses Program Dates Term 1: September 4, 2012 to December 14, 2012 Term 2: January 7, 2013 to April 26, 2013 Note: Actual dates for Management & Accounting specializations may vary, as determined by Portage College. Program Descriptions Human Resources Specialization Human Resources has become increasingly complex and there is an increasing demand on employers to interpret, understand and implement labor laws, taxation laws, human rights and employment standards issues. Recruitment, retention, occupational health and safety of employees is also a focus with companies. As companies grow, having Human Resource departments that give guidance, advice and leadership around these specialized issues is becoming necessary. The program focuses on the human resources issues that face most companies and will help prepare students to write the national knowledge exam required to be a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP). Management Studies Specialization The Business Administration Management Studies Diploma program allows students who aspire to leadership roles in business, industry, government or other organizations to develop management skills, using strategies acquired in this program, to compete in the world of commerce. 28 For more information call toll-free 1-866-652-3456
Northern Lakes College 2012–2013 Calendar Accounting Specialization Continuing to build upon the concepts developed at the certificate level, the Business Administration Diploma in Accounting gives students the opportunity to concentrate in accounting systems and procedures. Students will acquire a highly sought-after accounting specialization in addition to the broad range of knowledge and skills required to function in supervisory roles. Employment Opportunities Graduates of Human Resources Diploma program would gain employment within HR departments of private and public sector companies. Job titles include: Human Resources Assistant, Human Resources Officer, Human Resources Coordinator, Personnel Officer, Personnel and Recruitment Officer, and Staffing Coordinator. Graduates of the Management Studies Diploma may find employment as owners, managers or administrators in all areas of business including local government, community organizations, industry and corporate business. Expertise obtained in the Accounting Diploma program will allow graduates to begin a career as a professional in the accounting field. Employment opportunities for graduates are in the areas of bookkeeping, auditing, accounting, payroll, tax preparation and financial services. Further Education & Training Options Students who successfully complete the Human Resources Diploma program can apply credits toward the Bachelor of General Studies (90 cr), the Bachelor of Human Resources and Labour Relations (90 cr), the Bachelor of Commerce (120 cr) or the Bachelor of Management (90 or 120 cr) at Athabasca University. Once students have a degree they can apply for the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation. Graduates of the Accounting Diploma who wish to continue their education are well on their way to earning professional designations, such as CGA, CMA, CA, or may also opt to continue their studies by entering into a degree program in business. Entrance Requirements Academic Requirements Must have 30 credits in Business Administration Certificate (Northern Lakes College or equivalent). For admission to the Management Studies Diploma and the Accounting Diploma, if prerequisites vary from this, applicants may be required to attend an interview and may be screened by Portage College. Students enrolled in Business Administration Certificate (Year 1) may take courses for the Diploma (Year 2), providing they have the prerequisites for those courses. Business Administration – Certificate and Diploma Students completing the Management Studies Diploma may choose to work toward a degree in business such as a Bachelor of Management or Bachelor of Administration. Graduates may also be granted advanced credit toward a professional designation in the Institute of Canadian Bankers, Canadian Institute of Bookkeeping or Certified General Accountant (CGA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or Certified Human Resource Professionals.
