High School Dual Credit
What is Dual Credit
Dual Credit allows High School students to take College
course(s) and earn both High School and Post-Secondary
credit(s).
Benefits of Dual Credit
Dual Credit has many benefits including:
• Provides a head start on a Career or University program,
or graduation from High School with a post-secondary
credential that will open up job opportunities.
• Lowers future workload by being able to complete
courses toward a credential before entering a postsecondary
institution.
• Provides cost savings by requiring fewer courses at a
post-secondary institution due to a reduction in tuition
fees.
• As time and money invested in education at a postsecondary
level can be significant, exposure to courses
earlier can assist in determining if a specific career is the
right one for the student.
• Provides an opportunity to take courses that are of
interest--not just ones that fill a timetable.
Courses Available for Dual Credit
Courses in the following programs have been offered as
Dual Credit by NLC to various school divisions in the
region, although more programs are currently under
consideration:
• Carpenter
• Forestry and Harvesting Technician
• Health Care Aide
• Power Engineering – 4th Class
• Welding - Apprenticeship
How To Enrol In Dual Credit Courses
1. Students enrolled in High School contact their school
counsellor or principal to ensure they are eligible and
approved to take the courses. Upon approval from the
school counsellor/principal, the NLC Application for
Admission, enrolment form and a Dual Credit Consent
and Agreement form are completed and forwarded to
the School Division office for review and submission to
Northern Lakes College.
2. Upon receipt of the application package, and review
for meeting of entrance requirements, the College’s
Admissions Services office will confirm the applicant’s
admission status and inform them of any additional
requirements.
3. Textbooks, materials, log-in instructions, and other
information will be forwarded to the school for
distribution to students.
4. Upon completion of courses, marks will be shared with
the High School for submission to Alberta Education.
Transcripts from Northern Lakes College and any
certification earned will be issued to the student.
5. While enrolled in a Dual Credit course with Northern
Lakes College, students are expected to follow the
College’s policies and procedures with regard to rights,
responsibilities, attendance expectations, and holidays.
Course Delivery
Lectures for the courses are generally delivered to the High
School by Northern Lakes College instructors, using a
live conferencing system. The lectures take place during
regular High School classroom blocks during the week.
In most courses, students may be expected to attend labs
on weekends at either the High Prairie or Slave Lake NLC
campuses to practice the hands-on skills.
