ROCL0100 (2 credits)<br />

Road & Cutblock Layout<br />

The theory and practice of properly laying out a cutblock or road in<br />

the field when given a design map is taught in this course. Students<br />

will learn when changes to the design should be made and how to<br />

document them. Blocks must be traversed using GPS.<br />

SA001 (non-credit)<br />

Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)<br />

This course is for any person involved in the transportation industry.<br />

Learn the regulations related to offering, handling and transporting<br />

of dangerous goods by ground. Specifically learn about loading, segregating,<br />

documenting, placarding and spill reporting. Upon satisfactory<br />

completion, students will earn a certificate which will be valid<br />

for three years.<br />

SA002 (non-credit)<br />

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System<br />

(WHMIS)<br />

Learn to interpret labels and Material Safety Data Sheets in order<br />

to determine safe procedures to handle, store, use and/or dispose of<br />

materials. Upon satisfactory completion, students earn a certificate<br />

which is recognized by industry.<br />

SA004 (non-credit)<br />

H2S Alive<br />

This course is for those who work in the oil and gas industry or wherever<br />

H2S may be encountered. Topics include the properties and location<br />

of H2S, scales and response strategies, detector tube devices<br />

and electronic monitors. Certificates through Enform are valid for<br />

3 years.<br />

SA005 (non-credit)<br />

All Terrain Vehicle Safety<br />

This is the Alberta Safety Council’s All Terrain Vehicle Rider course,<br />

and includes the following elements: risk awareness, personal protective<br />

equipment, starting to ride, knowing your vehicle, safe riding<br />

practices and strategies, riding on hills and varying terrain, transporting<br />

materials, winching, attachments and transporting an ATV. Upon<br />

successful completion, you will be certified as an ATV rider by Alberta<br />

Safety Council, which is a requirement of many employers in both<br />

the forest and petroleum industries.<br />

SA010 (1 credit)<br />

Leadership, Health & Safety<br />

This course helps forest industry workers take a personal leadership<br />

role when they develop, set up, and improve health and safety within<br />

their areas of authority and responsibility. This course was produced<br />

in partnership by Alberta Forest Products Association, Alberta Workforce<br />

Essential Skills Committee, <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Lakes</strong> <strong>College</strong>, NorQuest<br />

<strong>College</strong>, Office of Learning Technologies (HRDC), Alberta Human<br />

Resources and Employment and Christie Communications.<br />

SA044 (non-credit)<br />

Bear Awareness<br />

The Alberta Safety Council certified course covers how to identify<br />

bears and how to avoid bear problems.<br />

SA065 (1 credit)<br />

Chainsaw Safety (PITS and/or AWTA)<br />

Learn proper procedures for bucking, de-limbing, notching trees and<br />

saw maintenance. Upon successful completion of this course the student<br />

should gain certification through the Alberta Woodland Trainers<br />

Association.<br />

SCAL0100 (3 credits)<br />

Scaling<br />

This course prepares a person to scale timber (the measurement of<br />

trees after being harvested) in Alberta. Successful completion of this<br />

course will result in an Alberta Scalers Permit issued from the Department<br />

of Sustainable Resource Development. This permit is required<br />

if you are going to scale within the province of Alberta. The<br />

course will cover the procedures and standards for Cubic Meter Scale<br />

(Log Scaling), Weigh Scaling, Cube Scaling, Tree Length Scaling, and<br />

Stacked Wood Scaling.<br />

SCN1270 (5 credits)<br />

Science 10<br />

Students will study energy and matter in chemical change, energy<br />

flow in technological systems, cycling of matter in living systems and<br />

energy flow in global systems.<br />

Pre-requisites: Science 9 or BEL Science 301 and co-enrol in Grade 10<br />

Math recommended<br />

SCN1288 (5 credits)<br />

Science 14<br />

Students will investigate properties of matter, understand energy<br />

transfer technologies and investigate matter and energy in living systems<br />

and in the environment.<br />

Pre-requisite: BEL Science 301<br />

SCN2231 (5 credits)<br />

Biology 20<br />

Students will study energy and matter exchange in the biosphere, ecosystems<br />

and population change, photosynthesis and cellular respiration,<br />

and human systems.<br />

Pre-requisites: Science 10 and Grade 10 Math recommended<br />

SCN2288 (5 credits)<br />

Science 24<br />

Students will study applications of matter and chemical change, common<br />

energy conversion systems, disease defence and human health,<br />

and motion, change and transportation safety.<br />

Pre-requisites: Science 14 recommended<br />
