Friends of the Earth Brisbane
Friends of the Earth Australia launched
the Climate Justice campaign in 2000.
Since that time the campaign has grown in
profile and momentum both nationally and
internationally.
Whilst the Climate Justice campaign is
predominately focussed on the inequitable
impact of climate change on vulnerable
nations which are largely not responsible
for the history of greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere today, as well as strategies to
gain ‘climate justice’; the Climate Justice
Tour had two more specific aims. Firstly, to
highlight the ongoing fossil fuel addiction
of the industrialised work that enables the
ongoing human rights abuses which are
...................................................................................................................................................................................................
perpetrated virtually unchecked in oil-rich
nations of the global South. And secondly,
to raise awareness on the current and future
climate change impacts on small island
states of the Pacific. To do this we invited
community leaders from Tuvalu, Samoa and
Nigeria to spend two weeks in Australia to
explain their experiences of climate change
and the oil industry in a range of forums.
The Climate Justice Tour was a key activity
of the campaigners workplan from the
point in which Steph Long began working
as the national campaigner (November
2002). The tour was originally framed as a
‘travelling summit’ based on the success of
the Climate Justice Summit during climate
treaty negotiations (COP 8) in New Delhi.
