B. Food <strong>Fortification</strong> <strong>in</strong> Ug<strong>and</strong>a<br />

Food fortification has been viewed as a potential strategy for reduc<strong>in</strong>g micronutrient<br />

deficiencies <strong>in</strong> Ug<strong>and</strong>a s<strong>in</strong>ce at least the early 1990s. The promise <strong>of</strong> fortification as a<br />

tool for combat<strong>in</strong>g VAD <strong>and</strong> other micronutrient deficiencies has been widely discussed.<br />

The box below presents a timel<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> major fortification-related activities <strong>in</strong> Ug<strong>and</strong>a<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce 1991. Currently, <strong>in</strong> addition to imported iodized salt, four companies <strong>in</strong> Ug<strong>and</strong>a are<br />

fortify<strong>in</strong>g: the Mukwano Group <strong>of</strong> Industries’ AK Oil is fortify<strong>in</strong>g vegetable <strong>oil</strong> <strong>and</strong> fat<br />

(VOF) <strong>with</strong> vitam<strong>in</strong> A; BIDCO Ug<strong>and</strong>a Ltd. is fortify<strong>in</strong>g VOF <strong>with</strong> vitam<strong>in</strong>s A <strong>and</strong> D;<br />

<strong>and</strong> two maize flour companies, UNGA 2000 <strong>and</strong> Maganjo, are fortify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>with</strong> a premix<br />

conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g several vitam<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> m<strong>in</strong>erals. Oil fortification covers 85 percent <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Ug<strong>and</strong>an market, while maize fortification represents only a small food fortification<br />

effort.<br />

This study tries to answer <strong>in</strong>formation gaps, <strong>and</strong> to help the government <strong>and</strong> Ug<strong>and</strong>an<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry to take well-<strong>in</strong>formed decisions. This study focuses on <strong>oil</strong> <strong>and</strong> sugar, as suitable<br />
