In addition, several development partners regularly attend meet<strong>in</strong>gs. The partners—<br />
foremost UNICEF, GAIN, <strong>and</strong> A2Z—provide various types <strong>of</strong> support to different<br />
fortification program activities, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:<br />
• National advocacy <strong>and</strong> communications campaigns for promot<strong>in</strong>g good health,<br />
good nutrition, <strong>and</strong> fortified food consumption,<br />
• Technical assistance <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g the regulatory system for fortification,<br />
• Technical <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ancial assistance for the food consumption survey currently<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g conducted by the Food Sciences <strong>and</strong> Technology Department <strong>of</strong> Makerere<br />
University, <strong>and</strong><br />
• Technical assistance <strong>in</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>with</strong> the private sector, conduct<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />
assessments <strong>and</strong> trials, <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> quality assurance <strong>and</strong> quality control.<br />
As Figure 3.2 shows, the food regulatory system <strong>of</strong> Ug<strong>and</strong>a <strong>in</strong>volves many agencies.<br />
From the fortification program’s perspective, the most important food regulatory system<br />
actors are:<br />
• National Work<strong>in</strong>g Group on Food <strong>Fortification</strong>—which <strong>in</strong>cludes more than 20<br />
partners, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g n<strong>in</strong>e different government agencies,<br />
• Ug<strong>and</strong>a National Bureau <strong>of</strong> St<strong>and</strong>ards (UNBS),<br />
• National Drug Authority (NDA),<br />
• Ug<strong>and</strong>a Industrial Research Institute (UIRI), <strong>and</strong><br />
• M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Health’s local (district level) food <strong>in</strong>spectors.<br />
