Whilst the supervisor has important responsibilities to engage, facilitate learning and<br />
provide support, equally the supervisee has an important role to play in getting the<br />
most out of supervision.<br />
Responsibilities of the supervisee<br />
Supervisees should:<br />
• actively participate in the supervision process<br />

• take responsibility <strong>for</strong> self-directed, lifelong learning including a commitment to<br />
ongoing professional development<br />
• openly express needs and expectations related to supervision. Ensure these <strong>for</strong>m<br />
the basis of the supervision contract<br />
• make the best use of supervision by coming prepared. This includes having an<br />
agenda of points to be discussed so time can be used effectively<br />
• make an ef<strong>for</strong>t to create and protect time <strong>for</strong> supervision. Try to keep scheduled<br />
supervision appointments, be on time and try and avoid interruptions<br />
• be prepared to openly identify and discuss practice issues which are challenging<br />
and the skills that need developing<br />
• work at developing trust in the supervisory relationship so that issues can be<br />
discussed honestly and freely. This makes supervision more meaningful and relevant<br />
• contribute to reflective discussion about practice experiences and learnings<br />
• be open to learning and improving clinical practice skills and incorporating this<br />
learning into ones work practice. Be prepared to be challenged in a supportive way<br />
• be open to receiving support and feedback during supervision and take time to<br />
reflect and respond to this feedback<br />
• take responsibility <strong>for</strong> seeking help when required, even if outside the regular<br />
supervision time. This ensures patient safety and wellbeing are always put first<br />
• commit to regularly reviewing the supervision process and give honest feedback if<br />
it needs to be adapted to meet changing needs.<br />
