Explore the individual personalities of the Sunnyside<br />
herd. Each class focuses on a specific horse’s<br />
characteristics and responses to his/her environment<br />
as well as tools and tactics for working successfully with<br />
the type of horse you experience.<br />

Put your knowledge of horses to the test and work hands<br />
on with a variety of horses. Find out what each horse is<br />
trying to communicate and how to respond in a way that<br />
makes sense to the horse. Learn how to ask a horse to do<br />
something clearly and meaningfully, how to get a result<br />
in a non-aggressive way, and how to reward the correct<br />
response. The horses will provide instant feedback as<br />
you put into practice all you learned! Prerequisite: Equine<br />
Psychology 101 and 102. Space is limited.<br />

Equestrian <strong>Program</strong> Participants:<br />
Please Note that for the safety of the horses,<br />
participants in our Sunnyside programs that include<br />
mounted riding must weigh 200 lbs. or less. For those<br />
who do not wish to ride or may be unable to do so, a<br />
variety of horse handling skills will be taught.<br />
Equine Emergency Preparedness<br />
(ages 14 and up)<br />
Have you ever thought about what you would do if you<br />
were in an emergency incident with your horse It could<br />
be an accident in which your trailer is overturned, a trail<br />
incident where your horse ends up at the bottom of a ravine,<br />
a horse’s legs are caught in fencing, evacuating for a major<br />
weather event, or a fire in your barn. Prepare yourself. Know<br />
how to respond instead of react. You may be the difference<br />
between the life and death of your equine partner. Prepare<br />
your equine partner. Learn how Natural Horsemanship can<br />
help prepare your horse to better physically, mentally, and<br />
emotionally handle a high stress situation. Join Kelly Sigler<br />
Patterson, 3-Star Parelli Natural Horsemanship Professional<br />
and Justin McLeod and Tori Miller of NC SMART (North<br />
Carolina Specialized Mobile Animal Rescue Team) as they<br />
instruct a lifesaving two-day educational training clinic for<br />
you and your horse, or for just you. This clinic will consist<br />
of detailed audio visual presentations, hands-on practical<br />
exercises, and interactive experiences involving both a barn<br />
fire simulation with fake smoke, a firefighter in full response<br />
gear, noise desensitization, emergency trailer loading, and<br />
barn and trailer safety evaluations.<br />

SPUR - Therapeutic Horsemanship &<br />
Horses for Heroes<br />
Offered in affiliation with Special People United to<br />
Ride (SPUR), these programs provide therapeutic<br />
horsemanship to children and adults with<br />
disabilities. Mounted and non-mounted activities are<br />
customized to each participant’s individual needs<br />
and abilities. Riders must be at least four years old to<br />
participate. Horses for Heroes is specially tailored for<br />
active or veteran military members who are suffering<br />
from the psychological impacts of service or<br />
sustained physical injury. Scholarships are available<br />

Family Equestrian Center Exploration<br />

Discover what an Equestrian Center is and what goes<br />
on there. Tour the facility then learn how horses<br />
communicate by watching them play.<br />
