After <strong>the</strong> Stall<br />

ham’s concepts w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> amb<strong>it</strong>ion <strong>to</strong> create an online encyclopedia wr<strong>it</strong>ten and<br />

ed<strong>it</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> world at large. W<strong>it</strong>h few exceptions anyone can ed<strong>it</strong> a Wikipedia<br />

entry at any time. As discussed at length later in this book, <strong>the</strong> possibil<strong>it</strong>y for inaccuracy<br />

or outright falsehood is thus legion, and Wikipedia’s users have both<br />

created new technology and solic<strong>it</strong>ed comm<strong>it</strong>ments from people who share<br />

Wikipedia’s ethos <strong>to</strong> maintain <strong>it</strong>s accuracy w<strong>it</strong>hout significantly denting <strong>it</strong>s<br />

generativ<strong>it</strong>y. Wikipedia stands at <strong>the</strong> apex <strong>of</strong> amateur endeavor: an undertaking<br />

done out <strong>of</strong> sheer interest in or love <strong>of</strong> a <strong>to</strong>pic, built on collaborative s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

that enables a breathtakingly comprehensive result that is <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong> individual<br />

contributions, and one that is extraordinarily trusting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. 86 Wikipedia’s<br />

character will no doubt evolve as, say, companies discover <strong>it</strong>s existence and<br />

begin ed<strong>it</strong>ing (and policing) entries that mention or describe <strong>the</strong>m, 87 just as<br />

ownership <strong>of</strong> domain names evolved from an informal and free first-come,<br />

first-served system <strong>to</strong> a hotly contested battlefield once <strong>the</strong>ir true value was recognized.<br />

88 Today, Wikipedia’s success s<strong>how</strong>cases <strong>the</strong> interactions that can take<br />

place among <strong>the</strong> layers <strong>of</strong> a technical system, w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> <strong>Internet</strong>’s absence <strong>of</strong> gatekeepers<br />

allowing wiki s<strong>of</strong>tware <strong>to</strong> be developed, shared, and <strong>the</strong>n taken up for<br />

educational and social purposes w<strong>it</strong>h contributions from people who have l<strong>it</strong>tle<br />

<strong>to</strong> no technical expertise.<br />

The ubiqu<strong>it</strong>y <strong>of</strong> PCs and networks—and <strong>the</strong> integration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two—have<br />

thus bridged <strong>the</strong> interests <strong>of</strong> technical audiences and artistic and expressive<br />

ones, making <strong>the</strong> grid’s generativ<strong>it</strong>y relevant not only <strong>to</strong> creativ<strong>it</strong>y in code-wr<strong>it</strong>ing<br />

as an end, but <strong>to</strong> creativ<strong>it</strong>y in o<strong>the</strong>r artistic ventures as well, including those<br />

that benef<strong>it</strong> from <strong>the</strong> abil<strong>it</strong>y <strong>of</strong> near-strangers <strong>to</strong> encounter each o<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong><br />

basis <strong>of</strong> mutual interest, form groups, and <strong>the</strong>n collaborate smoothly enough<br />

that actual works can be generated. If one measures <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> generativ<strong>it</strong>y<br />

through <strong>the</strong> amount <strong>of</strong> creativ<strong>it</strong>y <strong>it</strong> unleashes, 89 <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> generativ<strong>it</strong>y <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> PC<br />

and <strong>Internet</strong> grid should be measured not solely by <strong>the</strong> creativ<strong>it</strong>y <strong>it</strong> enables<br />

among coders, but also by <strong>the</strong> creativ<strong>it</strong>y <strong>it</strong> enables among artists—and among<br />

groups <strong>of</strong> each. 90<br />

THE GENERATIVE PATTERN<br />

Generative technologies need not produce forward progress, if by progress one<br />

means something like increasing social welfare. Ra<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong>y foment change.<br />

They solic<strong>it</strong> <strong>the</strong> distributed intellectual power <strong>of</strong> human<strong>it</strong>y <strong>to</strong> harness <strong>the</strong> leveraging<br />

power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> product or system for new applications, and, if <strong>the</strong>y are
