The Lessons <strong>of</strong> Wikipedia 139<br />
does l<strong>it</strong>tle <strong>to</strong> address a new category <strong>of</strong> Wikipedian somewhere between comm<strong>it</strong>ted<br />
commun<strong>it</strong>y member and momentarily vandalizing teenager, one that<br />
creates <strong>to</strong>ugher problems. This Wikipedian is someone who cares l<strong>it</strong>tle about<br />
<strong>the</strong> social act <strong>of</strong> working w<strong>it</strong>h o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> create an encyclopedia, but instead cares<br />
about <strong>the</strong> content <strong>of</strong> a particular Wikipedia entry. Now that a significant number<br />
<strong>of</strong> people consult Wikipedia as a resource, many <strong>of</strong> whom come <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> s<strong>it</strong>e<br />
from search engine queries, Wikipedia’s contents have effects far beyond <strong>the</strong><br />
s<strong>it</strong>e’s own commun<strong>it</strong>y <strong>of</strong> user-edi<strong>to</strong>rs.<br />
One <strong>of</strong> Wikipedia’s commun<strong>it</strong>y-developed standards is that individuals<br />
should not create or ed<strong>it</strong> articles about <strong>the</strong>mselves, nor prompt friends <strong>to</strong> do so.<br />
Instead <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>to</strong> lobby on <strong>the</strong> article’s discussion page for o<strong>the</strong>r edi<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong><br />
make corrections or amplifications. (Jimbo himself has expressed regret for<br />
ed<strong>it</strong>ing his own entry in Wikipedia in violation <strong>of</strong> this policy.) 51 What about<br />
companies, or pol<strong>it</strong>ical aides When a number <strong>of</strong> ed<strong>it</strong>s were made <strong>to</strong> pol<strong>it</strong>icians’<br />
Wikipedia entries by <strong>Internet</strong> Pro<strong>to</strong>col addresses traceable <strong>to</strong> Capi<strong>to</strong>l Hill,<br />
Wikipedians publicized <strong>the</strong> incidents and tried <strong>to</strong> shame <strong>the</strong> pol<strong>it</strong>icians in<br />
question in<strong>to</strong> denouncing <strong>the</strong> grooming <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir entries. 52 In some cases <strong>it</strong> has<br />
worked. After Congressman Marty Meehan’s chief <strong>of</strong> staff ed<strong>it</strong>ed his entry <strong>to</strong><br />
om<strong>it</strong> mention <strong>of</strong> a broken campaign promise <strong>to</strong> serve a lim<strong>it</strong>ed number <strong>of</strong><br />
terms, and subsequently replaced <strong>the</strong> text <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire article w<strong>it</strong>h his <strong>of</strong>ficial<br />
biography, Meehan repudiated <strong>the</strong> changes. He published a statement saying<br />
that <strong>it</strong> was a waste <strong>of</strong> time and energy for his staff <strong>to</strong> have made <strong>the</strong> ed<strong>it</strong>s<br />
(“[t]hough <strong>the</strong> actual time spent on this issue amounted <strong>to</strong> 11 minutes”) because<br />
“part <strong>of</strong> being an elected <strong>of</strong>ficial is <strong>to</strong> be regularly commented on, praised,<br />
and cr<strong>it</strong>icized on <strong>the</strong> Web.” 53 Meehan’s response sidestepped <strong>the</strong> issue <strong>of</strong><br />
whe<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>how</strong> pol<strong>it</strong>icians ought <strong>to</strong> respond <strong>to</strong> material about <strong>the</strong>m that <strong>the</strong>y<br />
believe <strong>to</strong> be false or misleading. Surely, if <strong>the</strong> New York Times published a s<strong>to</strong>ry<br />
that he thought was damaging, he would want <strong>to</strong> wr<strong>it</strong>e a letter <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> edi<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong><br />
set <strong>the</strong> record straight.<br />
If <strong>the</strong> Wikipedia entry on Wal-Mart is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first h<strong>it</strong>s in a search for <strong>the</strong><br />
s<strong>to</strong>re, <strong>it</strong> will be important <strong>to</strong> Wal-Mart <strong>to</strong> make sure <strong>the</strong> entry is fair—or even<br />
more than fair, om<strong>it</strong>ting true and relevant facts that none<strong>the</strong>less reflect poorly<br />
on <strong>the</strong> company. What can a group <strong>of</strong> volunteers do if a company or pol<strong>it</strong>ician<br />
is implacably comm<strong>it</strong>ted <strong>to</strong> ed<strong>it</strong>ing an entry The answer so far has been <strong>to</strong><br />
muddle along, assuming <strong>the</strong> best intentions <strong>of</strong> all edi<strong>to</strong>rs and hoping that <strong>the</strong>re<br />
is epistemic strength in numbers. 54 If disinterested but competent edi<strong>to</strong>rs outnumber<br />
shills, <strong>the</strong> shills will find <strong>the</strong>ir ed<strong>it</strong>s reverted or honed, and if <strong>the</strong> shills<br />
persist, <strong>the</strong>y can be halted by <strong>the</strong> three-revert rule.
